We are milking one of our little goats but not sure if we are doing it right. How do i know when i have milked out enough? She has very tiny teats so have to milk with 2 fingers. Takes a long time but her milk is so good its worth it! The first milking (her baby was weaned at 2 months and she is first time mom. Nubien/Kiko cross)) we got 3/4 qt, second we got half quart, not sure what we got last night as she stepped in the pail so the chickens got the milk but didnt seem to be quite as much. I know the more we ask for the more we get but dont want to make her sore! Hopefully someone will have an answer that my mushy brain can understand lol. Peace Connie in Alaska |

Connie, if she is not nursing a kid anymore, you need to bump her udder like a kid would for all the milk to come down. I usually do that a few times. And when I get no more milk to come out, she's done. But you have to get all the milk out if she's not nursing a kid.
I have been milking goats 7 years and the 2 I am milking right now, I can get milked in less than 5 minutes. They are SO easy and they're just good goats with big udders and long teats. But I did have a goat that had very small teats and took forever to milk her. My hands hurt. And with a first freshener, you're not going to get as much milk.
And the more ya feed her, the more milk she will produce too.

The only way to milk her teats is to pull them! There is just no other way to get the milk out they are so tiny! She also has extra "teats" that are not developed. Her baby was fat and sassy so i know she has plenty of milk. We are getting about 1/2 quart per milking. She is a very small goat. When we are done milking her bag feels soft but still looks big. I just dont want to lose milk. Hers is very sweet with absolutely no goat flavor! I have an electric milker but havent tried it yet on her. I am afraid that her teats are too small! It will be a pain to use as it will take longer to clean it out than to milk but if it would get the milk out more efficiently would be worth it! We will wean the other goat, T'other, soon and see how she milks. She isnt near as friendly as Stripper so i am not sure we can even milk her! It only took once for Stripper to get the idea! There is no right amount of time. If you want to keep up her milk supply you need to milk her out- which means milking her down until you are stripping out the last drops of milk in the udder. I always milked the goats until I was just get a dribble from each teat and then would go back and strip out each teat after finishing. Sometimes with a new to milking goat it might take a while but the more you milk her the easier it should become. If she has little itty bitty teats you can gently pull a bit harder than necessary and slowly her teats will (over a very long period of time) get slightly bigger.

Her bag should feel deflated. When you first start milking her the bag should be tight & as you milk her out it will deflate. I have one with small teats also & it is a bit more challenging but worth it! I usually get anywhere from 2 cups to 1 qt. I think it depends on how well she has eaten her grain-she has free will hay so I don't think it is from that. I hope this helps.
