I drove to QT tonight and on the way back, I saw a fox by the side of the road. There was a squiggly line making its way across the road--I don't know if the fox wanted to catch the snake or if it was just curious. You don't see too many foxes in town around here. I wonder if it means the coyote population is down. Or maybe they don't go after the same prey? I read that foxes eat lots of crickets and other insects. Makes me think twice about getting any hens.

Siberian domestics are from a genetics project from a scientist that tried to breed animals on a fur farm to be less aggressive (to take some of the danger and expense out of furring) and discovered that there were all kinds of traits like floppy ears, curly tails, and never before seen colors when he'd been breeding tame foxes for several generations. They're no longer sold for fur, but still maintained for scientific study and they occasionally sell them for pets. An imported Russian fox costs about 6000$
They are completely unique with entirely different traits from the arctic and red foxes bred by american exotic breeders-- those animals are still mostly wild. A siberian fox getting loose wouldn't know how to care for himself, that survival instinct is gone.

chicken wire is pretty much useless at keeping out predators, hardware cloth/welded wire is much more expensive, but , it will outlast most other wire and is way stronger than chickenwire, you can also trench around your pens and this type of wire will last longer under ground also...

Melin, you're right. I thought my pen was predator proof until SOMETHING BIT THROUGH THE CHICKEN WIRE to get to my hens.

I never had a fox problem when I still had my aussie. He would chase them away. Now I have 3 worthless, spoiled bulldogs who are still snoozing in the house at dawn. Any chicken pen has to be completely predator proof or they WILL find a way in.

Jen--I know a man who once had a red fox as a pet (he had a permit). He said a fox is like a cross between a dog and a cat. His "pet" got loose one day and that was the last he ever saw him. Is a Siberian domestic fox sort of like an Arctic fox? I think Arctic foxes are so cute. I also like the desert foxes with their big ears :)

I'd actually like to get a Siberian domestic fox someday. They've been bred for tameness for 60 years and are truly domestic (scientifically speaking, they're like a new species of dog)

I would hate to have a fox around if I had chickens! I wonder what can be done to keep them away? Do you have a dog?

Here in Co. Springs you see foxes everywhere. There was one in my backyard this morning, sniffing around and checking out my chickens. Probably the same fox that wiped out my entire flock last fall. I grabbed my cell phone to take a picture and he was gone the second he heard the door latch. Got a very blurry pic of his tail sailing over the back fence.

That is pretty rare to see a fox so close to town. I saw one that had been hit by a car but that was out in the middle of no where and I know where a family lived close to the river and a boarding stable. I think they are such pretty creatures.
