I cant find where I read it before, but I'm hoping some of the experienced goat-husbandry farmgirls know. Which breed of goat is it that has that unique flavor found in commercial goat milk people who say they "don't like goat milk" don't like? And what breeds have a more neutral taste that could more easily pass for cow milk?

I have Nubians and love their milk. Their milk is sweet and creamy. Nubians are known for a high butterfat content. I agree the handling and feeding do play a major role in the way milk taste. But there are a few breeds that have a goaty flavor to their milk. Alot of the British and English people think Togg milk has full flavor, charactor and prefer their milk that way. They think the Nubian milk is bland and boring. Its funny how people differ in different cultures. I had a friend who was from England and only liked this kind of milk and cheese made with this milk. She considered my goat milk very sweet and bland.
Most of the breeds have good tasting milk. They do range differently on the butterfat. Good hay and feed can change any goats butterfat and kick it up some. If you have a chance try milk from different goats if anyone near you has any. This is a good time to look around cause most peoples goats are in milk right now.
A friend of mine had Alpines and Sanans and her milk was really super good to drink too.She made fantastic Feta cheese with hers.
But any of the breeds are all good. I like all of them. I had a Togg. for 2 years but I didn't care for her milk but loved her personality so much. She went to a friend of mine as a pet to keep her wether company.

I have Alpines and their milk is absolutely wonderful! I have never had a problem with the milk tasting goaty and anyone who has ever tried it says "Wow! That tastes just like cow milk!" I agree that what they eat and the cleanliness of their housing and your milking equipment also play a major role. I got a Nubian from someone last year who was already in milk and it took over a month of her being here before we could drink her milk. I have also read about the Toggenburgs being bred specifically for cheese making! :)
I love my goats and really appreciate having our own milk and being able to make cheese!

I am curious as to whether Angora goats give enough milk to make them worth milking, and then if they do, where does their milk fall on the sweet-to-tangy scale?
I'm fantasizing about raising goats for their mohair and to clean up our orchard (after fencing it, Thanks, Mary Jane for the great article on fencing this month!)
Does poison ivy, wild raspberries, and/or grapevine affect the taste of the milk?

That is such a good point to bring up because what you feed your goat can play an important roll in how the milk will taste.

I have found taste can change if they eat pine needles, also jucca, certain types of weeds - a have some goats who just adore Thistle others really love scrub oak. I do have a few that will eat wild roses and Indian Paint Brush. Those I have found can give a different taste to the milk but I agree with Kris have everything very very clean is most important. Keeping things cold too is important. I also place Allpe Cider Vinegar in the water of all my animals which keeps worms at bay and no withdrawl of milk...
I love goats with all my heart - they keep you on your toes, give you years of endless fun and somethings heart ache - Life is never dull with a Goat!!!!

When I am milking my does, they get a 16% all grain feed only at milking time. Other than that they on pasture. In winter they get hay. When they are not in milk, they get a 10% grain mix. I would NOT let milk goats eat wild onions! I do in very ealry spring before the kid, but never while milking. You'll know why if it happens. Same with cows. My goats eat just about anything. They are quite picky girls though. I just put my goats out back with the sheep this morning. There is this really tall weed that sheepdon't like but apparently goats do. So I hope they will eat that down.
Also goats should be no where near azaleas, ivy, rhodedendron, wild cherry. And I do believe anything in the nightshade family, like tomaotes. I do hope you get some goats. They are fun. But have really good strong fencing. I have electric out back and chain link and field fence up front. They are smart animals and if they want out they will get out. I have heard if you can pour water through it a goat will get through it. It's the truth!
And I think taste has a lot to do with the cleanliness of the equipment and how fast the milk is gotten cold. I have a chest freezer in my milkroom that I put the buckets in right after milking. They stay there at least an hour. Sometimes they are almost frozen when I remember them.

What would you say is the best feed for milk goats. I would like to get a milk animal but I tasted goat milk and did not like it. Maybe it was what they had been eaten.Should I say what do you not let your milk goats eat? Vicki sister 280 |

I too found my Togg was much better for cheese making. My nubain and also Saanen was great but I had to watch what she ate because her milk would turn musky with too many wild herbs in her tummy. I did not like my Nubian but my oldest son did. I had a LaMancha who was so utter shy I gave up and just let her feed her babies and anyone else who needed assistance. I no longer do milk goats but that has been my experience. I have milked other farms goats and I also have to say sound maintaince and good feed make for better milk - do not short change them because is shows in the milk production and taste.

Abby is a 9 year old Lamancha who kidded in April. Her milk is just now getting to taste good. I took her boy and Sandy's 2 boys up the road a few days ago. Wonder if that had something to do with it. And Sadie only ever had boys also.

I had Saanens and Oberhasli...wonderful tasting milk. I have heard that about Togs..but may just be certain individual goats too.

Lol Kris... I'm willing to bet that it went to "cheesemakers like togg milk for making cheese" from "the only thing they could do with togg milk was make cheese"!

Jen, that could have been me talking about my Toggenburg, Sadie. Her milk was just awful and never did taste good enough to drink. And I milked her for 2 years. I heard that Toggenburgs were a breed of goat that cheese makers like because the milk is stronger. So I always said people who have a bad experience tasting goat milk probably tasted Togg milk. It really is strong.
I prefer Lamancha and Nubian and Alpine. My first milk goat was an Alpine and had really good milk. Now I have a Lamancha and a Nubian.

I have 2 Nubians & while I haven't bred them, I go then from wooliespinner here. I have had milk from her does & it is delicious. It is almost sweet.

Hi Jen, I've heard that Alpine's milk has quite a unique flavor. I personally prefer Nubian's milk ( I raise Nubians) because it tastes just like cows milk to me. Hope this helps!
