I know some of you raise your own meat. Do you get weird comments from people? Read my blog post http://troutwife.blogspot.com/2011/06/stigma-of-raising-your-own-meat.html and feel free to leave a comment about how you deal with them! Thanks! :)

We raise our own meat birds and have added turkeys to the mix. Most folks (family included) make comments thinking they are funny or cleaver but we just ignore them. However, when they come to dinner they just love eating our chicken or when they run out of eggs they want some for free ... lol. Common curtesy is just missing these days!

we're in VT too, and the local food thing IS big, but somehow it doesn't carry over to erasing that eeew factor when they know we have meat animals for some reason.

People do not harass us about raising meat anymore. Maybe it is because we have educated any one who would by now. When people ask if we will eat the chicken/turkey/beef/pig I tell them each animal had a great life and this is what they were bred for. We have friends who grew up on farms and raised and slaughtered their meat with their parents. One does whine in a joking manner about who she will eat when she comes to visit but she loves the meat and knows it is a way of life.

Here in Vermont the local food movement is given a lot of advertising so we are thought to be in the best situation.

We do not raise rabbits although there is a good market for them in restaurants but I have heard they scream when frightened so I ahve not tried it. I am not sure I want to raise so many to furnish the market so I have not begun.

In australia they have done away with the Easter bunny and are now using some cute endangered marsupial as their Easter mascot because there are too many rabbits in Australia and they want more people to shoot them and eat them.

Sheila, I started a whole post over on the Family thread called "Why do I do this?" I got so frustrated with my hubby a few weeks ago. But we got it all cleared up. And I get so frustrated with my kids too. They always ask what we are eating when they come to eat. Ugh! So from now on I am not telling them. If they want to eat it they can. If they can't tell what it is they are eating, then sorry. They don't know what real food is then.

I have 6 meat chicks that are just about ready to butcher. In a few weeks I'll do it. I just did 5 roosters by myself. And my hubby and I did 2 turkeys about 2 months ago. Plus I am raising a ram lamb right now for meat at about 9 months. ANd I have a bull calf that will go in the freezer. He's almost 3 months old. When he was born I named him Chuck. But this is why I have animals. I want to know what I am eating and where it comes from.

I don't care what other people think. I've eaten crickets (dried, cooked) and I've tasted ground hog (caught and cooked properly). I am a believer in self sufficiency, and eating healthier (unlike the genetically modified stuff sold in most stores today).

I think there is more stigma put on raising rabbits for meat than other things. We have been raising rabbits for meat for about 5 years now and the kids got really harrassed for it at school so they just stopped talking to anyone about it. We also raise goats, calves and chickens for food but less seems to be put on those as those are typical grocery store items. dont let it get to you! hold your head up and keep doing whta you are doing!

we raise meat here. i have done it all my life. my father was a hunter and a commercial fisherman. we were taught to respect life and give thanks for the food. i like knowing my animals were treated well. i say a prayer and give thanks before i butcher. i have no issues with it. as far as folks go, most just respect what we do here on the farm. hopefully we will be able to continue for a few yrs. this way. farm life is a good life for us. even when we have them killed, we like to be there. then we know it was bled out right and handled humanely. hope this helps. happy days sherrye

To be honest, when we were able to raise our own, I generally ignored the comments. Didn't bother me, I considered the source, and went on eating good quality meat. In reality, I think most people admired and envied us the opportunity to grow our own food. We really didn't get alot of the bleeding-heart comments.
