When I am out at the barn riding Tala I have noticed there are TONS of beautiful birds in the area. So far I have been able to see and identify a Red Winged Blackbird, but have seen at least 20 species. Due to the distraction of training a green horse I haven't been as observant as I would like but I am going to keep looking!
Anyone else a bird watcher or just enjoy seeing them?

Its amazing how long they'll flail themselves into the window - over and over again... We had a Baltimore Oriole that did that one year. I thought he would knock himself silly.
We saw a Kingfisher dive through the air today and it looked like he was aiming for a humming bird perched on a windvane???? We've never seen anything like that before - maybe it was just a coincidence, but it sure looked like he was out for that hummer... Fortunately the hummer was fine. :O)

I had to research to find out what a bird is recently. She is "fighting/flirting" with her reflection in my craft room window at the farmhouse. It has been going on for weeks now. At first I thought she was a juvenile cardinal because I could not get a look at her being still. Then I heard her singing and knew it was not a cardinal. I finally saw her resting on a power line. Turns out she is a scarlet taninger. I've not seen one here before.
My parents always had feeders and the bird books and binoculars were always on the window sill. Same at my house. We love to watch! We put up bluebird houses scattered around the farm. We had one family the first year. Now all our houses are full every spring. Put them up and they will come!

I love to sit on my front porch and watch the birds. We have a hummingbird that loves my petunias.
My daughter is helping someone train a green horse when she has time. Would love to see pictures of Tala.

I like birds too, my husband not so much, because they are messy. A friend of mine made me a Bluebird bird house, but some other bird moved in. I took the old nest out this year in hopes of getting blue birds this year- i don't think any moved in. I have some humming bird feeders out, but i seem to only get one bird every once in a while. We get lots of gold finches at that feeder. used to have quail in the neighborhood, but i think we now have more cats, so all the quail have left a few years ago. LOTS of robins and doves (grayish-look like pigeons) and some small cute brown birds. I guess i should take time and look all these up, i like to watch them and see the pretty different colors. Wish i could keep them from messing up my deck!

My favorites are the hummingbirds. A bluebird had a nest in the house on the fence in the part of the yard where the cats hang out. The evening that the babies learned how to fly was quite stressful. I thought one was a gone-er when Clyde pounced on it, but I shooed him away before any damage was done. The baby managed to fly to safety I believe. Talk about motivation to succeed!!

Kim--if you secure the nest in a tree, they should be safe and the parent birds will return to feed them. sometimes they fall, or get blown, out of the nest, and sometimes the fledgling babies spend some time on the ground before they can fly. Do they have all their feathers? It's likely that the parent birds are still around, and they'll continue to feed them on the ground. It's hard to keep baby birds alive if you're hand-feeding them--they have to be fed OFTEN and different birds have specialized diets. Momma and daddy bird are probably worried about their babies....

Oh my Gosh! I just found 3 tiny baby birds right outside my veggie garden! What in the world??!! There was nothing there but dirt. I carefully scooped them up with a garden tool and placed them in a nest my hubby found for me a while back. Now what?

I just put up a bird feeder for Nora and I. I looked up and saw a beautiful bird- an American Goldfinch! Very pretty and vibrant! I hope it comes back often!

I love bird wathching. I have to agree with Connie, chickadees are my favorites. We dont have them here, but I have seen them on trips.
I really got serious about identifying birds in Oct. '10. And have been enjoy all birds since.

I've been a birdwatcher since my son, at 7 years old, made me a birdfeeder out of a milk jug in Cub Scouts... (he's 36 now).. love those little critters!..

I love watching birds too! My favorites are the chickadees. What i love the most is when they first start singing in the morning before the sun even rises.

Once I had a "conversation" with a Pileated woodpecker. It was tapping on a tree trunk and kept craning its neck around to look at me. I started tapping on a wooden fence and it tapped back! It was so comical to watch--he seemed as curious about me as I was about him!

I LOVE watching birds, whether they're in my yard or out and about! I used to be good about putting food out for them and enjoyed all different kinds. My favorites are California Quail! They are so commical, how they run and suddenly realize they can fly! I've had all kinds of birds in my yard from magpies to hawks, robins, goldfinches, grosbeaks, flickers, downy woodpeckers, chickadees, and more. I have lots of great bushes and trees for birds and garden with them in mind.
Right now I'm going crazy with the "cravens" (crow or raven).
I'm not all that great at identifying them all but I sure love watching them!
