I have been looking for a pony for my daughters for over a year. I finally found one, and, it came with a baby!!! We just brought them home on monday. It has been so much fun. I have never owned a horse before, so we will be learning along the way.

Michelle, I just visited your blog again and read the most recent posting. The filly is playing games with you! She WANTS you to chase her! You are becoming her muse. Turn this around by not chasing her, but staying in with Momma and calling to baby. Give her a reason to come in, like rewarding her with lots of praise when she does come in. She sounds too smart for her own good, so stay on top of things and always be sure you are the leader. Otherwise you'll unintentionally reinforce bad habits. Good luck!

Congratulations on the new ponies,I always enjoyed working with them and have started quite a few ponies,every now and then I still get one in to do all the saddle training and long reining which is one of the best ways to get these little things going in thier riding career.
I wish you luck,you've gotten alot of good tips from all these gals here,one thing to keep in mind with horses of all ages is that every minute you are worth a horse you are training them,good or bad!

Sherry- I have a Straight Egyptian Arabian. Do you know what lines your horse is from? They are amazing horses and so intelligent! Nora and Tala are amazing friends. I have been the only trainer for Tala and she has never bucked me off and is incredibly willing. I think you will love your horse!

Thank you so much! I will check out that website. I can see that this little filly is going to be a handful, and right now we are just trying to train it to follow it's mama into the barn in the evenings, which it has decided it doesn't want to do anymore. We have been brushing it, petting it, and just handling it as much as possible. It's starting to come up to us, and stand there while we do this instead of running off. This is fun, but there is so much more to learn.

Michelle, here are a few suggestions. The foal, as young as it may be, will enjoy every new thing you can expose it to, and give it confidence. May I suggest getting a DVD that teaches you how to teach horse tricks? There are a few DVD's out there that will help you learn. While teaching and playing with your new foal, a strong bond will be made as well as teaching it respect and who the leader is. It will also benefit the mare as well by teaching her to trust you. Also, exposing the foal to everyday objects such as a tarp on the ground and having the foal walk over it; walking it to the mailbox(on a lead) to get the mail; giving it a non-destructable ball to play with and playing kickball with it (yes this can be done I've been doing it for years and it's a blast!); taking a light bandanna or a hand towel, placing it gently over the eyes, then lifting the edge to play peek-a-boo. There are so many wonderful ways to teach and play with your horses. Here's a website to see what I mean.

Michelle, just found a minute to look at your blog and bookmarked it, lots of stuff I want to look at at leisure. The ponies look so sweet! My parents had an Appaloosa horse farm when I was young, and I'm a sucker for baby equines! I've got a horse and pony in retirement that have been in the family a long time (27 years on the horse, 15 on the pony.) They're secure and safe for the rest of their lives, but I ride so little these days, I think next time i get the jones for a pet horse, I'll go with a couple minis for the lower food bill :D

Funny tip, if the baby is still small enough, pick it up off of the ground and carry it a little. As it grows it will always remember that the people are big enough to carry it around! :D Don't give the baby sweets like sugar cubes and cookies, nipping is one of the worst habits to try to fix in later life and that's where it all starts.

Congradulations!!!! small suggestion, don't leave halters and lead lines on, way to easy to get caught on things, tangled around each other, which can lead to tragedy.

Congratulations! It's really amazing to have a foal :) How old is it?
and Alee Is right, Don't let them start having bad habbits.. and make sure you love all over that baby everyday so it's easier to break in.
and what did you name it?

Michelle- that is really wonderful! How old is the foal? I would strongly suggest making sure that the foal doesn't learn bad manners as they grow quickly and something that can be cute on a foal (like rubbing it's head on a person, lipping or nibbling fingers, mutual grooming with it's upper lip etc) are very dangerous and hard to train out of a bigger horse. Foals are some of the hardest horses to have because they learn bad habits so easily.
If you have any questions- don't hesitate to ask. Their are lots of experienced horse people here on the forum.
