Posted - Apr 04 2011 : 9:47:29 PM Well we have made the decision to put Ben and Gen together and "god willing" some Great "fluff balls of" Pyreness puppies will appear. I am so excited !!! We have raised both, now adult dogs from pups and they are truley amazing, loyal friends to us and guardians to the goats. We went to the vet last week and check ups were passed with flying colors ... So any advise?? I've done my home work but sisterly in-put in always nice : )

Posted - Apr 07 2011 : 08:40:33 AM I am sitting here laughing my behind off cause the "proper" term for a female dog has been removed from my post and replaced with "bleep"...

Posted - Apr 06 2011 : 7:44:03 PM Thanks Bear 5, We did the vet thing for both male and female and I checked out the hip displasia before I ever invested in either and have since checked with other owners of the siblings and all is o.k. with all of them.
I have been reading for months and would not try to do this unless I was pretty sure I could handle it & my hubby will be around too. My vets are 5 min away by car, I have 2, I can call at anytime day or nite they are both very caring and up to snuff on the Correct care of the Pyr, know very well about the sedative cautions and I can communicate well with them too : )) They know and lov my doggies too : )) I am trying to be smart about this I realize its not something to do on a whim, even though that happens all the time.
Thanks for your care & concern :))

Posted - Apr 06 2011 : 4:38:23 PM my advice: Have a vet check done on the [bleep] and dog to make sure there is not any health issues that breeding might cause problems with, and make sure both parents and grandparents do not have hip displasia, cause it will pass on to pups and any other genetic problems that are in your breed, if you have not alot of experience whelping, please learn all you can first, know what to do in an emergency and when its time to rush to the vet, there are great books and tutorials out there regarding whelping, read and down load all you can, and study, study and study some more...

Posted - Apr 06 2011 : 1:36:12 PM Hi Brenda, How are you : ) Thanks for the encouraging words! We do have plenty of space for puppy raising and I have the sectioning off, planned for a sleeping and potty area. We have 3 people that have begged for a puppy and we know that they will take care of them like family members so depending on litter size I may not have too many others to adopt out, I am going to make each a Farm "puppy" bag for when they go to there new homes, with favorite toys treats and puppy history in it, to help the new families. I think keeping in touch with the adopting family is wonderful. Did you check with peoples vets to see how they were with animals before you placed your pups ??

Posted - Apr 06 2011 : 06:49:36 AM Hi Cindy! How exciting for you!!!! Puppies are so wonderful....., and Great Pyrenees are such beautiful dogs!!! We have purebred Golden Retrievers(you may have seen some of my posts), and they had 2 litters of puppies. The first litter was 5, the second was 13!!!!!(all live births) Each puppy went to really good homes, for the most part they went to older couples but we do have a couple of young families who have pups. I still keep in touch with each family, they share photos and stories, and we are thinking of a big reunion in the fall. I'm sending you an email. If there is anything I can do to help you out, please just ask! The hardest part was letting them go. I cried when each one left. It's easy to get attached in the 8 weeks they are part of your family, and even though they were a LOT of work- especially the 13- it is so worth it. We made the decision after the 2nd litter to spay Bonnie, as we didn't think that we could be so fortunate to keep getting such wonderful new owners. One thing I will say- make sure that you build a pen big enough and high enough to start with to hold them up until the day they go to their new families. You can section it off to start with, then take out the dividers as they get bigger. Our last litters pen was 3 feet tall, and 2 of the girls still managed to climb over by the time they were 6 weeks old. We should have made it 4 feet high! :) The dad, Bear did excellent with both litters, Bonnie would let him "help out" cleaning up in the beginning, then as they got older, he was a great help in tiring them out! We all here are going to want to see pictures of course!

Posted - Apr 05 2011 : 11:21:18 AM I just posted a nice long reply... but i must not have been logged on, darn. Anyway.. Thanks for the input Kristen, its a must that they be socialized and get along with others. They are what we teach them and that takes spending time with them! I am glad that you sent yours back and didn't wait in hopes for a change, it may not have happened in your case.

Posted - Apr 05 2011 : 10:38:25 AM The only advice I would give you is to make sure the puppies will go to good homes that will take good care of them. I tried a GP once. He was 3 years old and free. That poor dog did not last but a few hours here. He had every cat up a tree. He had my 2 pigs at the time all stressed out. My goats were terrified. I was crying. It was awful. I had to call the people I got him from to tell them I was bringing him back. And had to call a friend to help me get him back in the car. He was that big. Anyway, they are a special breed for sure. ANd I know now that he was just too old to bring to a new home. So please make sure you have homes for them. And the people understand what kind of dog they are getting. I have seen some really sad looking GP dogs. With hair falling out and malnourished from bad dog owners. And tied up too. Not good. I know you take good care of yours and they sound like they are very loved. I just have a thing about unwanted dogs. There are so many. Just my 2 cents.

Posted - Apr 05 2011 : 07:49:51 AM Hi Sherrye, I will try to do that someday when I'm home. I use to have pics of Ben on my blog, playing with his volleyball but I took them off. Ben is pure White with reddish spotted ears that you really can't see in the winter and Gen is a traditional Badger face with the body markings too. Gen has papers and Bens grand parents were papered but not both parents. Bens father has amazing presence !! I have met his parents in person and watched them work out in the field. I read that I could take her in to get x-rays to know exactly how many puppies there would be but the x-ray thing bothers me. I have time to think on that one. Has anyone ever done that ? Thanks for the well wishes : )

Posted - Apr 05 2011 : 07:25:17 AM Thanks for the inspiration Grace, I have helped in the birthing of many animals but not puppies...we had them when I was young and growing up on the farm but I wasn't involved, the moma dog we had then was all on her own, she was a shepard. I quess my feelings get in the way and I get "motherly" when my animals are expecting, I have to know they are doing OK. I'll keep everyone informed : ))
