this morning when i went to feed the girls. I noticed one hen was standing off to herself. when i went to checked her out, she just stood there. After looking her all over i noticed her poo had formed a white/yellow crust on her back end. Does anyone know what it is and how to treat it.

We lost a hen a few weeks ago. It was the same hen that has prolapse the year before, and we think it was another large egg. So sad when an animal dies.

update on chicken....This morning she is doing better. Her comb is upright with color. Her backend is clean didn't see any crusty poo.
I'm going to keep giving her and the others apple cinder vinegar.
Boy...they sure love it. I have to refull their water more often.
Thanks to all. I'll keep everyone updated on how she doing.

Hey
everyone sorry i haven't gotten back sooner. The hen isn't doing well. I been cleaning her back end with warm water and i also started
putting apple cinder vinegar in the water for her and the others to drink. This morning I found her curled up in the corner of the hen house. Her tail is droopy and she walks real slow. She still has crusty poo. Her comb is droopy too. Sheeye Can you look in your book and see if there anything that sound like what's she got.
Thanks to everyone for your concern.

awesome. We'd love an update on the hen, Bea! One of my coworkers hens died mysteriously a few weeks ago. We both kinda figured it had been eggbound, by what he'd described. Thats gotta be a pretty rough way to go. :(

Store bought Apple cider vinegar will work but its not as effective & quick like the raw...but some of us ...ie me don't have access to the raw so I gove my chickens store bought apple cider vinegar....so far no worms or bad buggies...& they do love it....Michele'

So, regular apple cider vinegar won't work? It has to be raw?!

Wondering how this hen is doing now? I have had to clean off dried up, clumpled up poo a few times. I do it in the house with warm water and dry them the best I can if it is cold out. Some times the poo comes off and there are feathers in it, it leaves a little bald spot.
I added raw apple cider vinegar to their water and also to some people food we throw in there for them (like cut up beans, oatmeal....wet things) and have not had the problem since.
Also remembering that when a dog has a poo stuck they sometimes act funny having it hanging there. I bet it feels awful to have that weight hanging off a hens feather buns too, it be like having your hair pulled all day long. Maybe that is why she was standing funny.

Hope your gal is better now. Stephanie

i am just thinking white yellow. egg color. see if she has a broke egg. then i would do as kris suggested raw vinegar does wonders. does she stay off to her self? you may need to separate her. if she is sick you would protect the others. they may pick on her if they know she feels down. i suggested corn in case she has a plugged or upset pooper. new food can make their poop change. raw milk makes my girls poop yellow like belles cream. i can look in my chicken book if she is not better.

Hi Bea. Maybe get a warm paper towel and try to get it off of her. It may be blocking her from being able to poop. I don't know what would cause that, but it needs to be cleaned up. Then maybe put some apple cider vinegar in their water. That helps with so many things, including worms. I hope someone else sees this and might have been through this and can help. I wm just guessing. Hope she will be ok.

she sounds like a few handfuls of cornmeal to help her poop better. i would check her to see if there is an egg stuck in her vent. have you fed her anything different lately? jjust a thought sherrye
