I am looking for any advice for surge milking machine that I can. I want to use one but know nothing about them. Get my milking cow next friday from a dairy man I have been buying milk from for about a year now. He knows I drive nearly 4 hours and I think he is doing it to help us out but I think I am getting a great deal on her. I am so excited.

susie, you say you are getting a cow, from the farmer you get milk from. Ask if you can watch or even help during a milking. That is the best way to see what you need to do. Get there early enough to watch the whole process, from setting up to washing down. You may not be using the same equipment at home, but you would have the general idea.

michele is right. i learned a lot from kfc. right now there is a video of a gal milking. when i first started i was very intimidated by the machine. i have had a lot of learn as i go moments. CLEANING is vital i take mine apart and run all stainless and my rim seal through dishwasher. it also sanitizes. i scrub my can with liquid dish then soak with hot water and strong vinegar for 20 mins. my pieces hang in a cupboard till next milking. when assembled it is heavy. i use a dolly in the house and a golf cart to get to the barn. the pump is an old one. it is on a permanent spot and enclosed with insulation. we can get negative degrees in winter. last winter pump would not run. i also bring my air hose in so it will not condense water in line. you only have a milk hose if you use a side can milker. i prefer them. i have one but way too big for belles needs. my machine pump will do 3 cows at once. i have used it on goats also. i have a head lock stall for the cow. if i dont she leaves when done having her rolled alfalfa. problem is can is usually still on. the can hangs on a belt called a surcingle. when i wash belle i only do area i need. i never get her wet up between her leg and udder. she gets a rash if i do. i then squirt a bit of milk on a clean white rag. removing her plug and checking quality of her milk. once a week i test with a mastitus test in am. i then hang can. i use plugs in my inflations. it keeps me from accidentally sucking up barn floor. keeps barn air off milk when removing inflations also. i come to house and strain milk into a 1/2 gallon ars. label and refrigerate. i dont use a disinfectant on her teats after milking. i think if things are clean and she is going into a clean pasture its ok. some will disagree. i hate the chemicals on her. i could dip with a vinegar water solution. i dont. she eats 8 pounds rolled alfalfa pellet with human grade molasses poured on top. she also gets DE about 3 times a week. my system is not perfect but it works for me. i use a 14 pound pressure on my machine. you should have about 3/4 a pulse to each second in a minute. when i come in i take the unit apart. i rinse all and usually load into dishwasher. oh and on the metal part of the inflation is the hookup for the air. i use a number 1 rubber doorstop. it fits down tight so you can immerse the whole inflation and cup. i have an inflation brush to scrub with. be sure to run your finger inside the rim for build up my dairy vet always checks there for dry milk first. in my opinion the dairy soaps are a waste of money. they are basically strong soap and bleach or iodine. you can do that your self. now the calcium remover is an acid and works well. i do it occasionally. well long instructions if you have questions please ask. happy days sherrye

Susie there is alot of info on Keeping a Family milk cow, forum. They have help topics with pictures. I grew up on a dairy, and now have a family cow. Still use those surge milkers! Cleanliness is important. But nothing is that hard. post those questions
