These are the nests DH made for my girls. I currently have about 100 counting roos also. I've got another 100 coming in 2 weeks. Just thought I would share because I was so impressed with hubby's design. We were blessed with 3 girls laying eggs in there this afternoon also!

Posted - Mar 23 2011 : 08:02:26 AM Jan, we had either the red or green ones(maybe both not sure) when I was a kid and we sold eggs by size then too. The laws in our area say we can have up to 300 birds w/o any inspections or grading of the eggs. I sell just "farm fresh" eggs and don't size them. I do make sure to put an extra big one for every pretty small one that is in there to make up the difference. My eggs are a nice variety of colors and the customers like the looks of that, not to mention the yellow is really like a burnt orange color, the color they should be not bright yellow like the groceries sell. Sorry, I'll try not to go off on a tangent. lol.

Posted - Mar 22 2011 : 11:25:18 PM They had a little egg scale that was so much fun to play with as a kid. Like this colorful one- http://contrary-garden.blogspot.com/2010/04/antique-egg-scale.html It allowed them to sort by size and sell eggs at different prices. As the birds got older and eggs bigger, they made a little extra money on the eggs. Jan

Posted - Mar 22 2011 : 11:07:08 PM Thank you from my hubby, Jan. Yes, I've been selling eggs for about 1 year now. Can't say I make much because of trying to get things up and running and buying more birds, more supplies, etc. Hopefully next year we might see a profit from it.

Posted - Mar 22 2011 : 11:02:04 PM Amazing! Not seen this done in such a fantastic way before.
Are you going into the egg business? Parents had a side business: They raised fryers for church and community groups before USDA inspection was required.

Yes I'll get him to do the measuring and put together a materials list. It will probably take a couple days as we've been kind of busy as of late. I'll post on here when we've got it.

Posted - Mar 21 2011 : 8:16:09 PM Cindy, showed my hubby, we are both impressed. Was wondering if he would give dimensions, or even draw it up and sell the instructions for few dollars. I would love to have one like it. And we are not as accomplished carpenter. But we can follow instructions. What ya think? Great work! Farmgirl #946 Linda |

Posted - Mar 15 2011 : 8:33:12 PM You go girl! 100 Hens and another 100 on the way...WOW! I currently have 2 hens which manage to give me almost a dozen eggs each week so I cant complain. I am actually getting 4 chicks the end of May so I will have a total of 6 layers...Yippeee! I really enjoy them and I love to share the eggs with my neighbors when I have extras (which isnt often enough with just the 2 girls) Once I have the 6 of them layin' I'll definately have enough to go around a bit! Posted - Mar 11 2011 : 10:01:27 AM Kris, Thanks, he got a kiss for a reward and that's it. See albeit this was very nice, I've asked for him to weld me 2 steps for my p/u truck that I designed 2 years ago but he hasn't done that yet so no major rewards til I get my steps (one for each door)!
Sherrye, I sell to individuals in 2 different towns. I have Aruconas(sp?), black sexlink, delawares, rhode island reds, buff orpinton, black austrolops, and one chanticlare and one leg horn (roo), one barred rock (roo) and then some mixed breeds that one broody banty hatches out.
Dorinda, that's great that you are getting a chance to have chickens again. I'm sure you will enjoy them a lot! There are lots of things you can use for nests if you don't want to spend a lot of money.
Thanks Angie and Karla.
I showed my hubby all your comments and he got a big smile on his face, so he also thanks you for your kind words.

Posted - Mar 11 2011 : 05:41:48 AM Yes I like the nesting boxes your hubby made. I am getting my first laying chickens March 21st they are suppose to be here. This is my first experience with the chickens. Now my boys had some chickens for 4-H when thay were young. But just one each and our dogs ended up getting them. Dogs are gone now. Anyways I am starting out with about 10 chickens I will show my Hubby the picture because we were trying to fiqure out what to do for nesting boxes. My neighbor is giving me a chicken coop.
