I went out to feed my chickens yesterday, we only have 4 left and a rooster, anyway, my little red one was missing. I started looking around for her and saw her over by the door of the fenced yard lying dead. I wonder what would kill one and not take it to eat?
My dh buried her when he got home. We have been talking of getting some more babies this year but I told him not until we can rebuild a better coop and make a yard so that other animals can't get to them.
I know there was a post about using the wood from pallets and that is what we are going to do. We have a lot of them around from the equipment dh gets. |

99% of the time when an animal is just killed and left, its a dog or cat, wildlife usually will not leave dinner behind...watch for loose dogs and cats in your yard, or look for prints , good luck...when you re-do your coop, use dig wire going down 18 in or more and dig wire out, to the inside and/or outside 3 ft or more, along with a secure top...

Anna~ that is what makes me the maddest. If they had taken her then I would have known something got her for food but just leaving her was what made me mad. Definitely going to make a more secure coop!

We go form sad to angry when stuff like this happens
I hate to think of any of my birds suffering at the hands of an aniaml that isn't going to eat it.
We've had stray dogs and ferral cats and possums do this |

Amy, when I couldn't find her I got a little panicky and then when I saw her and that something had killed her I was not a happy camper at all. I came in and called my husband, told we weren't getting any chicks till we could build a more secure coop. He said he would bury her for me. What a big baby I am! She was in the chicken yard so I don't know if something went into the coop and got her or what. I didn't hear any noise out there that night and usually if something is going on they make a racket. Dh caught a raccoon out there one night. He took off and so when he came back dh took care of that. Maybe it was another one. Dh did say he thought it might have been a possum because they will kill but not take them or eat them.

Sorry to hear that your little red hen didn't make it. Its always sad to lose a bird. I remember last year when something came into the yard and killed our ducks but didn't eat them. I was so mad!

Michele,
Pretty certain from the looks of her that some animal got hold of her. I didn't realize they would kill a hen and then not take it or eat it.
Never thought of putting a roost out in their yard. They do have trees out there and they get on the low limbs though.
She was the only red one.

from the sounds of it Denise she may have died from something internal...it is so sad but they can die at the drop of a hat...be fine one moment & the next dead......I am so sorry you lost her.
oh pallets are wonderful, I try to use them for everything if I can get my hands on them....I like that most are untreated so you don't have to worry about a animal getting sick if they chew on it....they make great roosting ladders as well....just remove every other board & attach it to a wall like a leaning ladder....the hens like it & it works great also to have one out in the run in a sunny spot for them....Michele'
