I have a chicken house and yard that i move around the pasture so that my chcickens can be free range. I need help I know my chcicken need extra light at night but do not know how to make that happen as long as I am moving them around anyone out here know what I might can do.

Wow- So egg-cited reading this post.I have a small coop with just 2 hens in it. THis will be our 3rd year with them. I do not have a light so generally my girls stop laying by late November and start up again towards the end of February(just started getting eggs again last week! Yippee)
I never even thought of hooking up a solar light (why I dont know- it just never occured to me)
What a great idea! My DH doesnt want to run electricity to the coop- and Solar will solve that problem!
Thanks as always for teaching me something new my dear sisters!

Yes they are laying some they are about 2 to 3 years and yes our days get longer but not as long as they say to keep light on them. Have to decide to do solar on them. Thanks for all the advice

Susie, I wouldn't think right now in Texas you would have to worry about extra light at night. I think they would be fine without it. It should start being daylight longer soon. How old are your hens? Are they laying right now?

I was thinking maybe a battery, hooked to a lamp. Living in amish country I have seen things like this.

Depending on how far out maybe an extension cord would work? Or like Tina suggested something solar. We have a chicken pen that is able to move around as well and we keep our chickens in it until they are old enough to go into the big coop with the big birds. We have it wired to a little tiny lamp light bulb and use an extension cord, sometimes even up to 2, to keep them warm enough in the cool spring nights. Is there anything solar available that you could put in it? That way you wouldn't have to worry about wiring...??? We just got chickens 2 weeks ago and ran a cord to the coop temprarily until we get it wired but we aren't moving it around.
