Posted - Mar 13 2011 : 8:58:37 PM Hey Patricia. How many litter boxes do you have? If you have the one, and all three cats use it, the 10year old may be "prissy" (we used to use this term at the clinic where I was a tech) and doesn't like the smell of the other cats' bowel movements, so he chooses to go outside of the box.
I would add another litter box to the mix if you only have one. If this particular cat is larger, then yes, you might try for a larger box. He might be going outside it by accident. Also, another trick we used at the clinic is to actually put a little catnip in the box, it attracts the cats and makes it more appealing to them in general. Good luck!

Posted - Mar 13 2011 : 4:37:34 PM our cats are 18, 10 and 6. The 10 yr old is the one with litter box issues. I wonder if he needs a bigger space to go in. he is a big guy. other than that I don't know what to do |

i use a plastic tote for my girls cause one of them -panther peas all over the top and out side of the box,use non cented litter at first then slowly add your litter back in |

Posted - Mar 04 2011 : 12:16:34 PM If he likes newspaper, try a dish pan with the slick ads paper in the bottom then shred the newsprint paper and put it in so he can "scratch". When I worked at a vet clinic this is what we used for "litter". When I opened my boarding kennel, I used the same and still use it when I suspect one of my kitties might have a UTI and has to be isolated. Works pretty well. Just change it 1-2 times a day and you can burn the paper.

Posted - Feb 28 2011 : 12:11:37 PM I lost my 22 year old cat last year, the vet said she was the oldest cat he had seen. I had never thought about how old cats can be. She was out hunting the summer before she died. I still look over at her sun spot and expect to see her. She started having accidents a few weeks before she died, but that was the only time.

Posted - Feb 28 2011 : 09:27:02 AM The cat we had when I grew up ended up being 20 as well, but the past few years she couldn't see that well. My parents actually had to have two cat litters. They also had to clean them at least once a day.

Posted - Feb 28 2011 : 08:26:07 AM My cat is twenty and she has a thing about privacy. I moved her box around until I found the spot she liked. Maybe because there is a towel or newspaper it confuses the cat. I would take that away. Also my cat doesn't like it if her litterbox has anything in it so I clean it a couple times a day as well. Just a few tricks to try. Good luck.

Posted - Feb 28 2011 : 07:45:24 AM We have this issue with out 2 male cats. What about the litter, or his environment? Anything new or conflicting? Cats are far more "sensitive" to their environments than we could ever imagine, and I've found that when this happens, if there is no physical issues, then it's usually environmental. Pinning that down, however, can be tricky.
We thought the cats world would be blown by the arrival of our daughter, and I was prepared to find poop/pee everywhere. They could have cared less...UNTIL she started walking. Then all bets were off. Just when I'd gotten comfortable!
Try Cat Attract litter and then go back to your normal. It worked for us. Now, I just make sure I clean the litterbox 2 times a day and I haven't had any problems.
