I just went out to feed and usually the pigs are running to the door and just suck up the food. But this morning the brown pig was laying by the door and could barely get up. She did but just wobbles. She does not feel hot at all so don't think she has a fever. What could be wrong? I have LA200 and Pen. But don't know how much to give her or if I should at all. Just thought I'd ask here before calling a vet. But I might do that anyway right now.

Glad your piggy is doing fine now. Sounds like she had a belly ache and it passed. Glad for your both.

I don't know if it's because they are girls, but these 2 pigs have been so easy so far. And it could be because they are out back in the goat barn and can't see me at all. The last 2 times I had pigs they were in the front pasture loose and i could not walk out the door without them squeeling for food. So it was horrible. But this time (knock on wood) they have been little angels. Not bad at all. So far so good.

Angie, what kind do you have? Is he a pet?

Katheryn, I hope you can get some one day. Just a few really aren't that hard to raise. And they grow SO fast you really don't have them all that long. I have never had mine more than 4 months.

Yes, hopefully I have it under control now. She is running around like a puppy. Eating like a pig. They are so cute. And they have more than doubled in size since I got them. So I think in 2 more months they will be at least 300 pounds at this rate.

Yeah, I think she must have had food stuck in her throat yesterday. She is just fine now. She was better after she threw up. So something must have lodged in her throat. Anyway, I sprinkled some dust all over them and in the whole stall. I hope this will help. This stuff has no effect on the meat. I will check to see in a few days if I see any creepy crawlies.

Kristin- I am glad to hear she is acting good still. I know you will treat them. I would move back butcher dates. I think it is better to have a nice fat healthy pig at butcher then a questionable one.
My brother in law did medicated feed and shots to the really sick, but he lost a lot. It is a sad situation. I wouldn't buy from him anyway. He is a producer, and it shows!

i agree with the girls here. i know you will watch her close. could it just be that she ate too fast. eating like a [pig and choking. when choking they cant get there breath so they are stumbling around. hope its all over for you now. also i would use a pour on if it warms up. we have a outbreak here too. ours came from pigs that we bought from the valley. its warmer there so came with the lice. now we have to do all of them. so glad she is feeling better. i would watch to be sure she doesnt get a temp too.

She looks great this morning. Up and running and eating like a little pig. I am going to town today so will go by the co-op and see what they have for those creepy crawlies. I would like to try DE and I also have wood ashes. I do have an appt. at the butcher for the end of March or the middle of April. If I think they need a few more weeks I can call and cancel the first one. The Ivomec pour on says there is a 70 day withdrawal time. That's putting it right at butcher time. So I cannot use that. They had been wormed right before I got them. I only have 2. I have had a pig a few years ago that had pneumonia. He was better in a few days with antibiotics. Anyway, they will both be treated with something today. And I guess I need to treat the whole area. And the chickens will not go in the pig stall. So I guess that's why they have this problem. But they are in the rest of the barn. I need to check the goats now.

Angie, what did your brother do with all the sick pigs? I would hate to give a whole herd shots. I hope they all got well.

I would start with some DE or wood ash. I would apply it to all the pigs. Make sure to wear a mask when you dust them. That fine dust is hard on human lungs. I would also look at some water solubile supplment. I know you want to eat them alter, but by the time they are ready the meds or supplements will be out of there system. You can get the water solubile kind. I would be treating her as if she were sick. Pigs acan seem fine then die the next day.
My bother in law has an outbreak of pneumonia in his pig operation right now. I dust my pig as I do my goats and chickens.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Not a pig person here, but lice and mites usually are seen on animals that are already sick. so it may not be just the little buggers, but something more serious. I'm glad she's feeling better, but please keep an eye on her. Some animals do a good job of hiding their sickness so the other animals won't drive them away.

Well, she seems to be just fine now. When Allen got here we went ahead and gave her the shot. I fed them and she was eating really good. I just stuck the needle in her neck and got it in this time. But then we started seeing little critters crawling on her. They looked like really small ticks. SO I got my pig book and saw 2 pictures that looked like them. Lice and mites. There are a few things I can do. When it's cold like this they recommend using a powder. Like DE. So I need to go get some. When it's warmer they say to use a pour on like Ivomec. So it looks like they need some more work. I cleaned their stall really good and put in fresh straw. But anyway, that's just strange the way she was this morning and tonight she's just fine. I hope she is in the morning.

Thanks for all the help. Oh and the Ivomec has a withdrawal of like 70 days. And I am planning on taking them in the end of March. So that's kind of cutting it really close.

She was born around halloweeen. The chickens do NOT go in there where the pigs are. I din not smell the vomit. I didn't notice a smell anyway. No difference in the feeding. It did look like the pig feed though. She is probably about 100 pounds right now.

I just checked on them and she really looks like nothing is wrong right now. But my friend will be here in a few minutes and we will go ahead and give her a shot. He's here now.

was it her regular food in her vomit? did she find eggs with shell on and eat too many. maybe a hidden nest? does her vomit smell fresh or sour or sweet? is it gritty or does it look feel smell like what she ate completely undigested. how old are they? how big? like the size of a grandkid? is she coughing? just trying to help. when one pig gets sick in with others its good to try to figure out why. you could prevent the others from catching it if it is something like that. if i can help kris please let me know. sherrye

Sherrye,it looked like food that hadn't been digested yet. I am feeding them dry cereal, bread, milk, pig starter-grower pellets and fruit and veggies. They are in a stall so I don't think they could have gotten into anything poison. I'll have to wait til I can get help to hold her to give her anything. Even though she's not feeling 100%, she can still move fast! They are coming this afternoon to help.

She looks a little better right now. But she did throw up. I thought she was eating but she was throwing up. Never seen a pig do that. I tried to give her a shot of pen. but she ran. I got a little in her. So my friend is coming this afternoon to help. I was going to let them out but part of my electric fence in not working. So I have to get some posts to see if that will help. I can't let them out without that working. I did tear down some of the plastic on the door to the outside so they can get some sun and fresh air. And I cleaned their "bathrooms". And put fresh hay on them. They also like to eat hay so I gave them a flake to eat too. So now she is resting up on the ledge bench thing. She should be ok til I get back.

Yes, they are for food so I have to be careful where I give the shot. And I do have a pig book but there are so many things it could be. It ws not that cold last night either. It does look like it could be piggy pneumonia so the antibiotic should work.

Hey Kelly. Where have you been? I have missed you. Yes, we should go to the park or something. I could get Kansas. I;ll find out when she's out.

Kris- I would call a vet as it could be many things. But I know you are planning on eating these animals. I don't know much about pigs so I don't know what they could have alive that would affect the meat. Hope she feels better soon.
