Posted - Jan 18 2011 : 12:34:54 PM Sometimes the best way to learn is just to do it. I have had goats now for 9 years and am still learning. Books are good but until you actually have goats you won't know a thing. It's good to know what they'll need and what to have on hand. Like they do not like to get wet. They need shelter more than anything. And good fences. Those 2 things are the most important. After that it's easy. The right food, fresh water, treats and lots of love.
I can't wait to see what you get. I love my goats. I don't think I could ever not have goats.

Posted - Jan 18 2011 : 09:20:33 AM it's ok!
i am one of those who loves the written word on the printed page so i forget to look online first for something- and i guess i could have worded my second part better!
i did go online and read a bit- i will go back--i'm just in the wanting/planning/learning stages so trying to read all i can before i make any investment-don't wanna harm the poor goats due to my lack of info!!!!
it's all good; thanx for replying!

Posted - Jan 16 2011 : 7:42:57 PM kathryn i am very sorry that you felt i was being rude--actually, my comment was meant to say that i was the dummy who had neglected to even look online before posting the original query--just shows how the written word can be misunderstood!

Posted - Jan 16 2011 : 4:46:24 PM I get Dairy Goat Journal and enjoy it,some of the past articles are archived online so you can read quite alot and get an idea of the content before you commit to subscribing,I have never seen it on the newsstands anywhere, the only way to get it is to subscribe online as Pennywise somewhat rudely stated. Check it out at www.dairygoatjournal.com and click on "library" to read the archived articles.

Posted - Jan 15 2011 : 4:00:58 PM I used to buy it at Tractor Supply. A few of my goats are registered so I get the magazine with my updated registeration fees.
It does have a lot of show goat info. but, some of it still applies to me. I like the section where you're given pictures of 3 goats to look at and then rate like a show judge would rate them. I've been impressed with my results!

Posted - Jan 15 2011 : 09:09:31 AM I have gotten that before but it seemed like it was more about show goats than what I needed. So I quit getting it.
