We have a sheep farm in Kentucky where we raise sheep and goats for meat and wool. I spin wool and a nearby friend has a wool processing shop. I think that we need badges for spinning and other fiber arts. We have a few spinning groups nearby that are gaining popularity too.

What is your favorite wheel? Do you sell wool, raw fleece, or roving?
Do you dye your own? What process do you like for that?

Hi Deborah,
I raise Icelandic sheep and Old English Sheepdogs over here in Missouri. I am just learning to spin. I love the wonderful ladies on the other thread, too! They are immensely helpful. Most of them spin and do other fiber work. It's a great place to share...we share pretty much everything...not just limited to fiber and animal talk.
Welcome aboard!

Happy Farming!

Kris, we are closer to Nashville. The farm is about an hour and a half from there. I'd be happy to help anyway I can. Also, join the group in the barnyard. Feel free to e/m anytime!

Deborah, how far are you from Chattanooga? I'd love to come up and see your sheep. I'd really like to get a few fiber sheep one day. Maybe you could give me some advice. And I have a spinning wheel I inherited from my great grandmother. It needs to be put back together and used. I think that will be one of the things on my list of things to learn to do this new year. Along with knitting.

Deborah and anyone with sheep or goats or just loves fiber, please join in our group in the barnyard. We talk about it all. We all have blogs and share our fiber experiences.
I have shetlands, Corriedale crosses, polypay crosses, Blueface Liecesters and BFL crosses. Our breeding program is based on great spinning fibers. I have about 45 head now. I do sell my fleeces locally, on Ebay, and on my blog when my studio gets too full. I love to raise the sheep, skirt and wash the wool, card, spin and knit and weave and dye.
I too have LGDs.
Welcome shepardess and spinner.
I have 2 wheels now, had four and sent two with my daughter Ang. I love my louet...after I started using it the others got retired. I think everyone choses the one wheel that makes the experience nice and relaxing.

Thanks for the welcome girls! I have raised Merino/Ramboullet mix and Cheviot. My ram was a Hampshire. I have only been learning to spin for the last year and I just got my own Ashford Kiwi wheel today. YAY! I also have ab Ashford traditional which is at my mothers in Michigan.
I have 25 fleeces to process and have 7 pounds of roving to spin this winter. I also had Great Pyrs. as guard dogs, but never tried to spin their hair.

We currently have only Katahdin meat sheep. Twelve ewes, one ram and fifteen new lambs. The ram will be for sale after this breeding cycle if anyone is interested. He's obviously a great producer! lol

Hi Deborah - I would not call my self an expert but I am sure willing to help and share what I know - going on 17 years of raising fiber animals and making a full time living out of it. Your more then welcome to join us on the other thread - I know that it is a long one and do not worry about reading everything - we all will gladly answer questions, share stories and support you thru the good and bad times. We talk about also more then just fiber but our love of fiber and the animals the produce it are all special to our hearts. I have raised Southdown, Icelandic and Corriedale sheep, I also raised French Angora Bunnies, Alpacas and Llamas and now my farm is full of Angora, Cashmere and Cashgora Goats. I also spin any and all things I can get my hands on - I have friends who raise Yak, Musk Ox, Buffalo, and Every Sheep Breed under the sun. I also spin dog, cat, wolf, coyote, fox, any type of plant material and then the man made fibers such as rayon. So as you can see I live, eat, breathe and LOVE all things animals with fiber. So welcome and a great idea for a badge - not sure why there is not one????

Hi Deborah. Nice to have another fiber nut join the boards. I have Shetland Sheep - just a little spinners flock and spin on an Ashford traditional wheel (I have 2 of them). Please do come and join us on the sheep and goat thread. I have been just starting out with dying but Grace is the expert.

Blessings, Sheri

welcome Deborah

there are lots who work with natural fibers. Check out the sheep and goat thread.
I have a schacht, gosh can't think how to spell it right now. A ladybug. I love it.
I have not sold any wool, or fleece yet. I have 2 sheep. I did just try dyeing this summer, and can't wait to do more. I just really enjoy having the whole process, from sheep to knitting needles.
