Posted - Dec 11 2010 : 06:13:15 AM My milk goat Sandy has had a runny nose and a little coughing the last few days. I just gave her a shot of LA 200, 3 ML. I know I won't be able to use the milk for us but will it be ok to give the chickens?
Also I just refilled all the water buckets and troughs and put ACV in them all for all the animals this morning. I had done that a few days ago. But since I can actually use the outside water hoses I cleaned everything and added ACV.
So what else can I do for Sandy? It's been SO cold at night here the past few weeks. I was going to make her a sweater from a wool sweater I had felted but she didn't want anything to do with it when I tried it on her. So I will not be able to cover her. I also do not have electric outlets out there in their barn. I have it all winterized with plenty of straw on the floors and plastic on all the openings except the big door. I just don't know what else to do. And I don't want her to get pneumonia. So any suggestions would be great. Thanks. And tonight will start raining and then turn to snow flurries Sunday with nights being in the teens. I am so ready for all this to be over already.

Posted - Dec 12 2010 : 6:39:06 PM Well, there's snow everywhere. School is cancelled for tomorrow and probably Tuesday also. We live at the foot of Lookout Mt. and when the mountain people can't get down then they call school off. So I'll probably have Kansas both days if her mom can get to work. There was a community get together tonight at 6 but there was no way I was getting out in this. It's just about a half a mile from my house but it's just TOO cold. I found some of hubby's wool socks and after I took a hot shower I put them on. My feet are nice a toasty warm finally. We were going to take the old gas logs out of the fireplace and start burning wood but hubby didn't get home this weekend. So I have electric heaters running. It's just not the same as wood heat. The heat pump just blows out cold air. So right now I have long johns on and wool socks and a big thick robe. I am finally warm. I just feel bad for the animals.
I will give the goats some warm molasses water in the morning. There's ACV in the water (or ice) right now. I hate giving her antibiotics because right now she is giving alot of milk. But the cats and dogs are loving it. Nice warm milk straight from the source. Yum!
I hope you get all your work done tomorrow. No snow out there in Or.?

Posted - Dec 12 2010 : 2:03:13 PM Hey SHerrye. No problem. I see now why you try to stay busy. It does help to keep the mind off the pain.
I had to give Sandy another shot of LA 200 this morning. Plus a shot of B-complex. She is looking a bit better. It's already freezing cold here. It's been dropping all day and the water troughs are all frozen again. They were not this morning. It's been snowing all day too. Not sticking so far thank goodness. But flippin' freezin'! I hate this. It's going to be in the teens tonight. That's just oo cold. I want to bring all the animals inside. But they have shelter and the dogs have a heat lamp in the milk room. I have 3 heaters going in the house and it's still cold in here.

Posted - Dec 12 2010 : 08:20:57 AM hi all, yes you are right kris. i was born busy. my dad used to say i was like a fart in a cast iron skillet.lol through the years i never really understood my way. then when i was older and had more pain i realized this is how i cope. my sister has been very sick with this porphyria lately. she has to stop and lay on couch. we have extreme pain and sick stomach. its like i have a very achey flu. if i am busy i can preoccupy my mind and find relief. it does not always work. also if i can force myself to get outside and move and get adrenaline going i get some relief. mind you there are couch days too many for me. i just love life and want to be up doing. also i have sooo very many wonderful folks in my life. we all work together. i am never alone. it was a hard lesson to learn. i now ask for help when i need it. i use a golf cart and tractor to get around. animals are on auto feed and waterers. i am too sick for it to be hard. papa is the hero in my life. for 38 years he has created a life for me from my dreams.
WE tried our pork last night. it was so mild and sweet. they hung at 200-195-185-185- super lean. we sold enough to pay for our meat and 6 new weaners and some pig supplies. ever forward. well gotta feed sophie. i hear her crying. the calves and mamas are sure crying in our pastures this am. everyone is weaned except sophie. happy days sherrye

Posted - Dec 11 2010 : 7:46:13 PM Yes, it has started raining. Pretty good so far too. But they are dry in the goat barn. I am freezing in my house. It's so cold in here. And we might get some snow too. I don't want any.
Sherrye, you are always so busy. How do you do it? You just wear me out with all you do there. I am thinking about getting a few piglets soon and I am tired just thinking about all the work they will be. But I love pork. And some friends up the road want one and will go in half for all the food. But they will be here. So I will have most of the work to do. But that's ok.

And she does not have a fever. SHe's eating really good. I think she'll be ok now. Thanks. And thatnks Sherrye.

Posted - Dec 11 2010 : 12:16:47 PM Hi Kris, Is her snot clear? Does she have a temperature? Keep her as warm as you can, make sure the barn is as draft free as you can get it, make sure she has clean bedding, and warm water ( my goats love their water a little warm when its really cold out). Remember that goats are very susceptible to Pneumonia, so you need to watch them. When my goats have a cold ( runny nose and cough) I give them Fias co farms Immune Support Tincturesince this aids in preventing Pneumonia and does not mess up their systems like antibiotics do. (Antibiotics reek havoc on the digestive system, especially in goats, causing more stress to their systems). It really works well and its so much better for them. Mostly made from Herbs. Its worth checking out. Hugs to you and Sandy! Hannah

Posted - Dec 11 2010 : 06:50:25 AM hi kris, i am so sorry to hear sandy is sick. i hate when they are feeling down. i was thinking, what about those microwave disks you heat in micro and use as a bed warmer. it would last a little while. its easier for them to hold heat in smaller areas too. just my only thought right now. how are you? hows miss T? i am ready for spring too. its raining hard here today. was going to run sophie and belle across road. now not sure WAY wet out there. happy days sherrye
