Posted - Dec 01 2010 : 4:46:28 PM I have a lot of arthritis in my hands and I am doubting I would be able to milk a cow or goat to the extent they require it. Do any of you use an automatic milking system? and what kind is it?

Posted - Dec 04 2010 : 3:17:12 PM Hi Sherrye, actually, that is not my maiden name. (My kids fathers name) when I remarried I kept it to keep the association for the children. Now they are grown I have nearly decided to discontinue it. My dad was a truck painter for Weyerhaeuser, we lived out near the bridge on Coos River. My mom never worked. I was in the marching band for Steve Prefontaines funeral. My older brother was just a year ahead of me in school, graduated in 1976. Such a small small world.

Posted - Dec 02 2010 : 7:50:11 PM Hey Sherrye, as you can guess I am bustin at the seams to get the details worked out. I am just so tickled to even be this close to having a "farm!" Its about 30 miles south of Tacoma - where we live. I grew up in Coos Bay, Or. I just love Oregon, but no real reason to move back there, Almost all my family is really from Texas. Too darn hot there! I am willing to wait for your little baby, it may take me at least that long to get ready for her. (if it IS a her! LOL) Lets keep in touch! I might even mosey down one weekend to take a look at what you are doing so I can copy some of your technique! PS, I been a milkaholic my whole life!

Posted - Dec 02 2010 : 08:26:23 AM Hi Sherrye, I don't have a farm yet! Where are you at? I will have to get a move on to be ready for a baby! Thank you so much for thinking of me. Are you just leasing space on other peoples farms for your cows? That is a really good idea and maybe I need to look into that. Thank you again for your information!

Posted - Dec 02 2010 : 06:30:41 AM ann, if you go to the website keepingafamilycow.com they have an auction site and a machine milker site. the folks on there are very helpful. they know cows. you can go to the tree of knowledge and learn great things now. i am working on my medicine case now. i have a metal suitcase with shelves i just got. i am going to put all my meds in it. then i am portable. i have cows on three farms right now. your not far from me. i am breeding my mid size jersey to my dexter bull. if she has a heifer i will be selling the calf. she would be a good milker and easy to keep and train. they are smaller and gentle. just a thought. if you come this way come see us. we have rv parking and fun mountains. i love goats and how joyful and loving they are. but i just love cow milk just love it. i was raised on it. as i type i am having rich sweet coffee with my belles cream yum. happy days sherrye
