So early last week we got a call from a friend of mine saying that she knew someone who had a 3 year old jersey available and asking if we were interested. We weren't even looking because I'm expecting in March. We were going to wait until after the baby came to look again. But Jessie sounded like the perfect cow for us so we went to look at her anyways and decided to go for it.
The lady who is selling her is just up the road and said that she could deliver Jessie for us. DH was away most of last week so we arranged to do it on the weekend. The owner said she would call to tell us when she could come. All weekend I was super excited and waiting for the call. It never came. So Sunday evening we called and left a message saying something along the lines of "I guess you got busy this weekend, we're very flexible so just let us know when you want to move Jessie, thanks..." Now its Wednesday and we haven't heard anything back from her.
Its probably nothing but I'm getting antsy. I'm especially surprised because I was under the impression that she wanted to move Jessie out sooner rather than later. How long do I have to wait before we call again? |

We are hoping to add a dairy gal to our farming family in the next year. I'd love to hear what everyone would recommend on how to get our first cow.
We have several dairy farm near us, so I am going to ask our vet (who is THE vet to all those farms) for some advice on who to ask. But, our deal is this...
we'll be hand milking this girly. I milked commercially for a while back in college, but it was SO long ago and so mechanized that I am trying to decide how
some of those ladies would have felt having to come back to the "ol' school" with us vs. the super speedy and efficient milkers.
Ideas to share? Anyone?

Congratulations on your new family member. We got our holstein/jersey heifer a year ago. She birthed in January and was great at standing from the first. She is pregnant now and due in the next few weeks. Her bag is filling but her vagina is not real puffy yet. She is bred to a belted galloway. Hoping for a bull calf because when you are going to eat it anyway a boy is just a tad easier to do in.

I am so excited to see pictures - we understand the busy part of this time of year. We will just sit quitely in the corner biting our nails but NO Pressure from us....

Sorry for the long absence, things have been very busy around here leading up to christmas. As soon as I find my camera cable I'll upload some pictures of Jessie and give a proper update. Jessie is a total sweetheart, things are going great with her! |

I hope you got you cow. I bet you are busy getting to know her. And also milking her. That takes time if you've never done that before. I hope everything's ok and that you both like each other. That makes a huge difference in making the relationship work. I've been reading this post and am anxious to know how it's working out so far.

Contgratulations on getting your new jersey cow! I got Buttercup in early October and she is suppose to calve this month but I am beginning to think the girl that sold her to me was wrong about her being pregnant. She is showing no signs that I can tell. She has put on weight since I got her but her udder is small and the teats are too. Does anyone have any advise on telling if a heifer is pregnant? Especially due in the next three weeks????

How Exciting!!! I will uncross my fingers and toes but you will have to share pictures with us and all the goings on. I have always wanted a cow - but with all I have to take care of I just did not think it would be fair to the cow or myself. I will be living thru your adventures so don't skimp on details...
Again, Congrat's on the new addition to your happy home.

I am not great at waiting for things so I understand where you are at but maybe something happened at the farm or to the farmer that is keeping her from calling back. Just know everything will work out in good order and maybe the universe is setting thing into motion for your higher good. Still, I know it is hard and will keep our fingers crossed for your higher good.

oh where oh where has my little cow gone? oh where oh where can she be?? have you found her yet. there have been a few here on craigs and kfc has had a few cows for sale lately. if not this cow then another cow very soon for you i hope. sending hugs happy days sherrye
