Posted - Nov 07 2010 : 8:39:19 PM Sky's x-rays came back. No Hip displasia thank goodness, but the ACL is probably shot as we were suspecting.
However, the vet is recommending giving her a while of pretty much bed rest/ reduced activitity to see if the scar tissue will build up to re-support the joint. She lives a pretty sedentary life style anyway so we are hoping this will help. I feel bad my poor puppy is gong through this.
We have her on a strict diet to try and get any extra weight off and I am making sure she is getting exercise, but gently. I think it is driving her a bit nuts because we can't wrestle and play like we normally do.

Posted - Nov 09 2010 : 05:43:32 AM I might look into that, Audrey. I was also thinking of vet wrapping her leg on bad days. My vet seemed to think with the amount of scar tissue already there she is mostly recovered already. She went on a long walk the other day and wasn't really painful the next day so I think we are slowly getting there. Poor dog.

Posted - Nov 08 2010 : 10:33:05 PM My sister's collie had his ACL go out and she opted for no surgery. He gets around pretty good but there is a definite limp. At least now you know for sure what is wrong. When my Cairns ACL went out I did a lot of research on the net and came up with a website that makes braces for these situations. A Cairns legs are pretty short so my vet didn't think they'd work too well for him but it might be an option for Sky?

Thanks for the update. I'd been wondering.

Posted - Nov 08 2010 : 08:24:45 AM Oh my gosh! I hope that poor Sky Dog feels better! We give our elderly Bassett mix some glucosamine and it really seems to help.

Posted - Nov 08 2010 : 07:54:40 AM Wow Sheila- that is great news. The vet advised me to start her on the Glucosamine/Condrointin and Omega 3's so I am probably going to buy a big tub of Cosequin and give it to horse and dog to horse both :)

Posted - Nov 08 2010 : 07:14:28 AM Alee, our dog (a lab) has had messed up acl's on both rear knees since he was about a year old (3 yrs ago) I used to babysit for a vet's kids and he checked him out after both injuries, and kept an eye on his progress. We opted for no surgery (very $$$) and he has developed enormous chest muscles. There was a time when in our old house which had stairs, he would walk down the stairs on only his front legs. Didn't seem to have much pain (whimpering, etc) but was lame for sure, especially after hunting. We started giving him glucosamine/chondroitin every day and he is so much better now. I can't believe it. Not sure if it's the glucosamine or just time, or whatever, but he uses all 4 legs all the time, and can jump up into the back of a pickup or into the cab :) with ease, and even after hunting all day he doesn't limp or hold a rear leg up when he walks. pretty amazing. |
