Posted - Oct 12 2010 : 09:30:32 AM Sky's leg has been sore for a couple weeks, but I thought she just had a strain or a pulled muscle and for a while it looked like she was getting better, but the last few days she has been getting worse. On Sunday, Doug told her to come up on the couch with him to cuddle and the ended up collapsing in pain.
So I made an appointment and she has a torn ACL and needs surgery.
I am so so so stressed at this point. I want to help my dog and get her taken care of but I have no idea where the money is going to come from.

Posted - Oct 21 2010 : 09:44:27 AM Thanks ladies! I had to leave her there of course and will be calling them this afternoon to see how she is doing. I feel so bad that I can't be there when they do the surgery but I have to watch Nora. Otherwise I would be the surgery assistant!

Posted - Oct 20 2010 : 9:43:47 PM LOL! You're as bad as me. Our vet is back in Littleton (our old address) so that's where we had to go for Hobbs' surgery. But I trust her implicitly so don't mind the 100 mile trip. And we still have our house down here so that's where he get to recuperate. I'm able to work from home so we are staying here and DH travels down on the weekends. She'll be up and around in no time!

Posted - Oct 18 2010 : 4:46:04 PM Thanks Audrey- Yes, the other techniques are quite expensive. I don't have that much money! Eek! I wish my sister had availability in her Daycare on Wednesday because I would LOVE to help with the surgery but I guess I'll just have to make do with taking her home afterward.

Posted - Oct 18 2010 : 3:58:48 PM The one you're getting sounds like the same one we had done. The others were much, much more expensive and my vet figured with a 14 year old dog under 30 pounds we didn't need the high tech stuff either. Can't believe there are so many choices in this surgery, just goes to show how common this injury is. Sounds like Sky dog is in good hands (your and her vets). Keep us updated on her recouperation.

Posted - Oct 18 2010 : 12:37:12 PM Audrey- We decided not to do the TPLO. We are doing the old school repair where he will take a graft of ligament from somewhere else, thread it through where the ACL is supposed to be and repair the graft with the ACL. I know there are newer techniques like the TPLO but this surgery also has a high sucess rate and Sky isn't a highly active dog usually. Her prognosis with this repair is just as high as with the others. If she were a working dog or an agility dog I might go with the technique (I am banking on the name) where they drill into the lower leg bone and loop a nylon cord through to stabilize the joint.

Posted - Oct 18 2010 : 12:27:57 PM It's good that the surgery is on Thursday. If your vet is like mine, they'll keep her overnight and then you and Doug can be with her for the weekend to get her over the first few days. My cairn is actually walking on his latest repaired leg already! We had his surgery on Wednesday and he was walking on it by Sunday. Tough little guy! I'm not sure which of the surgical options Sky is having. The one we chose had the longest recovery time, some I think are walking on it right away.
Hobbs says to tell Sky not to get discouraged, she'll be right as rain in no time!

Posted - Oct 16 2010 : 6:50:47 PM Thanks Audrey- Luckily Sky is a pretty laid back dog, so bed rest won't be too hard on her. I will probably lock her in the bathroom during the day so I can make sure she is restricting her activities. It's a small bathroom but a little bigger than a crate. So as long as I put a blanket in there and her food and water along with some chew toys or something she should be okay. She'll just sleep for the time I am at work and then we can do pottying on leash.

Posted - Oct 16 2010 : 6:10:27 PM I'm surprised that your vet doesn't do payment plans, especially if he knows you well. When our puppy broke her leg this past summer the surgery, pins, medication, and x-rays totaled up to about $800. At each vet visit there was a bill to pay and luckily we had the money in savings to pay but while I was writing the check out the secretary stated "You can just put a deposit down if that would help." Our vet is great and sometimes does work for free to those who are unable to pay. Poor doggie...hope her surgery goes well and that she is good to go after that. It sucks when an animal is in pain and needs treatment but the cost is prohibitive. She has a great owner who is willing to help her get through it! -Elizabeth |

Posted - Oct 16 2010 : 3:26:21 PM Oh Alee, I just read this and I can completely sympathize with your plight. I just had my Cairns right knee fixed Wednesday, 6 weeks after having his left knee fixed! Same as Sky dog, torn ACL. I know about the sticker shock for one of the surgeries! It doesn't surprise me one bit that you were looking into a loan for it. God was kind to us and we had the money for ours (we've been saving for a down payment on some land). I miss the days the vets would extend credit to you and let you pay it off as you could but I guess too many people abused that trust and now they make you pay before the surgery.
Just know that the surgery will help your pup but take caution with her other knee. If one knee is bad the other probably is too, when they tell you to only take her outside on a leash LISTEN TO THEM! I didn't and mine blew his ACL on his good knee only 3 days after the surgery on the other knee! NO RUNNING, NO JUMPING!
With our first surgery there was little usage of the leg the first 2 weeks then he gradually started to put it on the ground to help steady himself for bathroom duties. We had him on complete bedrest for 4 weeks and at the end of that time he was starting to be able to walk around fairly well. The next 2 weeks we saw quick improvement and at the end of week 6 he was getting around real good dispite having the other knee injured too. I was very surprised after his 2nd surgery, he was getting around by himself that same afternoon! He tires easily but he's doing better with this surgery than he did with the first. He keeps looking at me as if to say, Mom! I know what I'm doing, I've already gone through this remember?
Just hang in there. Sky will be walking good and pain free in no time!

Posted - Oct 15 2010 : 9:17:46 PM Thanks Jennifer- yes it is more disappointing than anything but my parents are awesome so I am very thankful for that!
She goes into surgery on Thursday. I know it will be a long road of recovery for her but I am hoping that she pulls through well. She is going to feel so much better afterwards

Posted - Oct 15 2010 : 09:29:51 AM What a rollercoaster ride :( Our loan that we were going to do fell through. :( But mom and dad are going to help out and take care of the surgery until I can pay them back in January. That is good. I just was really looking forward to having a good payment history showing on my credit record to help rebuild it. I guess now was not the time. :(
