Yesterday, I was driving home from my sister's house and there on the side of the roade about 3 miles from my house, what did I see on the side of the rode at a local weekend sale??? Two young fully-feathered geese and 2 Muscoy ducks. Our poor Buster goose has been alone since July when Precious his life-long companion passed, so you know what I did. For $34 I got two geese and two ducks. I am hoping the geese are hens and the ducks are pair. They spent their first night here in the buck pen, Big Al was curious but left them alone. Buster was upset, beacuse he is used to sleeping inside the hen house not out in the goat pen. He was honking about 12:30 am, so I put him where he usually sleeps. This morning he walking along the outside of the goat pen trying to make nice. Today, I will fix it where the new birds can be inside at night and see Buster too. Welcome to the new additions to my flock.

Both of the geese appear to be Pilgrim crossed with Chinese Brown, I usually can tell by looking at the beak when they are older, the males usually develop a "knob" there, also at about a year the males appear stockier and heavier than the females. If you are brave enough you can sex them by checking their vent, holding the bird on its back and put you index and second fingers on either side of the vent and press down, if it is a male you will be able to see the penis, you have to apply pressure for this technique, and I am always afraid I will hurt them, so I what for obvious physical signs as they get older. The ducks are Muscovy and one of them is slightly bigger than the older and raises its head feathers, hisses and gets between me and the second on, I am assuming this posturing is telling me this is my drake

Hi that is pretty cool, What kind of geese are they? I had always wanted geese, and this spring I got 9, lost 5 to a dog, but I have one remaining Toulouse (Walnut) 3 buff's Gabby, Cashew, and Cashette. They are the best pets I have ever had. Hope they are Hens for Buster as well. How do you tell the difference? I think mine are all hens but I'm not sure. I just call them my darlin's |

It is on Nichol Sawmill Road right across the street from J.L. Lyon Elementary school. Usually she has just garage sale stuff, but now and then I have seen chicken roosters, different rabbits and once a couple of guys leaving with a couple of big white ducks.

Hey Kathy, Just on side of the rode huh? I would have loved to have been there. People use to sell animals on side of the rode all the time, have not seen that in a while. Use to be a farmer on 242 that would sell stuff. I have purchased some ducks and chicks from him. He passed away a few years ago. Hopefully the geese will be hens, and then Buster can have his pick. We use to have a Goose named Commander and he would sit in my daughters lap and she would sing to him. But, he would chase me back to the yard, I would run before I thought about it and then stop and try to scare him. It became a game. They are such fun.
