Posted - Aug 18 2010 : 11:44:21 AM Hello everyone! I thought since we have topics about fiber goats, dairy goats, cows, etc. Why not have a topic about dogs and cats?! This can be a fun place where we can share about them. Same as the other topics but we just talk about dogs and cats. Make since? I am blessed with 1 beautiful australian sheapherd dog named Ginger. She is 12 years old and is doing very well for her age. I also have one beautiful cat named Kelby who is 2 years old. She is our barn cat and is black and white. we got her from our local animal shelter a few months ago and so far she loves our home. I also work at the animal shelter as a volunteer so I see alot of cats and dogs. Well I think that does it for a start. Hugs, Channah

Posted - Dec 31 2010 : 8:46:24 PM well, a friend of mine volunteered to take my doggie until we move, hopefully by the end of the month, she has been over there since weds, I miss her terribly and have shed many tears. funny how an animal crawls into your heart that way. I know they are taking good care of her and all but I worry about whether she will forget about me...am I being silly ? we can go over and see her but I have this fear she'll forget me. |

Posted - Dec 05 2010 : 6:25:32 PM A few months ago, I posted a question about therapy dog groups. I'm happy to report that my 3 year old rescue "wheatable" (nickname for wheaten terrier mixed with something else) and I are now an official therapy dog team! We completed our last observation at the nursing home today. Boomer didn't flinch when a lady bopped on the head, but he did give me a soft "grrr" when an elderly gentleman kept sticking his hands in his face and barking at Boomer. I quickly removed my dog from the situation.
Fortunately, our future work involves libraries and children - two things Boomer loves! |

Posted - Nov 28 2010 : 03:08:43 AM My dog (a 12 yr old yellow lab) certainly chose me. She showed up at my house during one of the lowest points of my life, and I was not wanting a dog, in fact I thought this is the last thing I need right now. But she was persistent unlike any dog I have ever known. She just wouldn't leave me alone, and now six years later she's still here and I've never been more in love in my life. She's my little girl, my angel, and the love of my life. I believe during circumstances like mine at the time she was sent to me, she has truly been a blessing.
I can't stop laughing at the post above about labs powerful tails. I can't tell you how many times my labs tail has cleared a table or slapped me in the face. |

Posted - Nov 27 2010 : 6:31:43 PM marianne,
I really didn't come up with how animals pick their people, my DH claims the fame to that one. I didn't set out to 'win' any of our animals over, it just happened!
As for labs, I was raised with black labs and I really do love their disposition, temperament, etc. My first lab was a chocolate, Hershey. She was such a sweet, wonderful dog - and even though she's been gone for nearly six years.....I still ache in my heart when I come across something of hers (even a random hair of hers in my van.)
Unfortunately, my DH doesn't really care for the big dogs (childhood fear) - so he gravitates towards the small dogs, Chihuahua's especially. In my experience they're yappers but he claims that if they're trained right, they are not.
Oh well - at this point we have four indoor cats with two barn cats who will most likely join our crew if we can get them to use the box.
And oh how right you are about the lab's tails. If anyone was unfortunate enough to be sitting on the floor when it was wagging you got a good face slapping!
Take care and I'm so glad your daughter found her forever furry friend! |

Posted - Nov 25 2010 : 02:46:01 AM Karen, It's so funny that you say cats choose their people because I swear our dogs have chosen their people. Maybe they are part feline! But, each dog that we attained was for this member of the family or that member, but eventually the dogs have corrected us about who belongs to whom. And by that I mean which person the dog owns, not the other way around! They just seem to claim their master and it has worked out beautifully. I think the animals sense who needs their unique abilities. For instance, our small chihuahua was supposed to be our daughter's and a dog who wouldn't remind her of the faithful lab that she had lost 6 mos. before when she got her. Well, soon after "gracie" came home, my daughter's life got very busy and she found that although Gracie didn't remind her of her greatly missed labrador, maybe it wasn't in the best ways. (Small dogs seem tougher to housetrain, need more care and are so much more territorial - at least Grace is! And the high=pitch barking!) But, at that point, I needed to slow down physically and having a warm buddy to remind me to rest more often was rewarding.
The almost-white yellow lab that I have always wanted, and probably foolishly brought home while I was reeling from a brain cancer diagnosis of a friend, will not leave my daughter's side. She is so devoted to her and I love that my daughter has the keen eyes. ears and throaty bark of a labrador behind the door of her home even though she doesn't live far from us. Our last dog, black lab, is truly a family pet and loves/ignores us all equally. We call her the Great Greeter. No matter the length of time of your absence Molly enthusiastically ( and given the strength of a lab's tail- painfully) greets you. At 11, she looks like a puppy for a while every time you get home! Thank goodness for our dogs! Marianne |

This is Abby, my daughter's cat. She is sassy and backtalks when she's been scolded. She loves to lick your fingers and must be 'nested' in your arms rather than laying in our laps. Ironically, this was supposed to be DH's cat but, as you know, cats choose their people and she chose Meg.......this after my daughter reFUSED to acknowledge Abby when we brought her home because she did NOT want yet another cat. Abby just wormed her way into her heart. |

If this comes through okay.....this is Teddy (Theodore) our Himalayan at 7 weeks. He still sleeps like this and is spoiled rotten. I'll post other pics if this comes through okay as we have three other cats whom we also adore and have very unique personalities.
We also have two 'barnies' (barn cats) that I SWEAR are going to kill me if they don't stop giving us sad eyes through the door that say "Please, PLEASE let us in!" |

Posted - Nov 22 2010 : 8:43:28 PM Oh, as a dog trainer, this could easily become my favorite thread! I love seeing everyone's pictures and hearing their stories. :)
I currently own a Shih Tzu named Sophie and a Texas Blue Lacy named Blue Boy. Sophie is my agility and obedience rally dog and Blue is my falconry and schutzhund dog. My husband calls them my entourage! In December we're adding a Sphynx cat to my entourage. Very excited about doing shows with him as well.
I don't see a thread for farm girls with exotic pets... What about those of us with a rat, ball pythons, a breaded dragon, crested geckos, and a frog? :) We may live in in the suburbs, but that doesn't stop me from having a zoo!

Posted - Nov 05 2010 : 05:23:24 AM Thank you so much, ladies! I was wondering if rawhide was good for them anyway. So, Ruth-how long do you bake a bone for? And yes, I love little Oskar so much. We have two other dogs as well- a 4yr old Doxie and an 11 yr old Yorkie. |

Posted - Nov 04 2010 : 5:14:00 PM We stopped giving our dogs rawhide because of simular problems. Our puppy, who is now over 1 yr would swollow them when there was about 1 1/2 inch left. I was afraid he would end up with a blockage or choke, so we took them away. What I have started doing, is buying beef soup bones and baking them, then give them to our dogs. These bones do not splinter and they love them much better than the ones you buy at the Pet store for big bucks. Today we bought 12 bones and they were $6. I put them in the freezer till needed. I have read that the pressed rawhide is better for them as it will break up when swollowed. Good luck with your new puppy - nothing like it Hugs, Ruth

Posted - Nov 04 2010 : 2:00:41 PM Hello ladies! I have an urgent question. I have a mini dacsund puppy that is three months old. Today he yelped, started running-there was what appeared to be a long string coming out of him. On closer inspection it appeared to be rawhide covered in poo. Anyone have a similar experience, or know what this is? He appears fine and very playful still. Please help! |

Posted - Oct 28 2010 : 6:10:08 PM My previous dog loved Oreos. I'll never forget the first time he got the cookie my husband had accidentally dropped on the floor. I was so worried because the dog had eaten chocolate and you didn't dare mess with this dog's food. Not to worry, the beloved beast lived to the ripe old age of 16 and probably ate chocolate 2-3x per week.

Posted - Oct 28 2010 : 08:12:51 AM Sherrye while it is widely known that dogs shouldn't have chocolate, our Chocolate lab was helping himself to Hersey Kisses for weeks without anyone knowning. I thought the kids were eating the candy, the dog would only take a few at a time so it wasn't like the dish was emtpy. I asked the vet about it and he laughed and said Bo would need to eat his weight in it 100 lbs, for it to hurt him. We also had a daucshound that used to eat milk duds and M&Ms and it never hurt her.
