Snakes is why I live in Alaska. No snakes here because it's to cold. I grew up in Texas and Oklahoma. I can still hear my grandmother yelling to my grandfather "Virgil get the hoe, get the hoe." We all knew what that meant. My hat is off to you all who have to deal with snakes. Ewww!!

I went into the laundry room with a load to wash and found a milk snake all curled up and cozy on my previous load! Husband had knocked off the dryer vent cover the day before and that snake just slithered right in! We weren't sure what kind it was (thought it may have been a copperhead), so he shot it a number of times. Now I have "holey" jeans, towels, sweatshirts, etc....and two holes in my laundry floor! Mostly garter and milk snakes here.

I hate snakes - It reminded my of the first, and only (so far) rattler we ended up with in our garage.

The first summer we lived in our home. We had just returned from the local convenient store with some ice cream. We were sitting in the back year having our ice-cream when we heard a hissing sound. My hubby got up and said- I will be back I gotta disconnect the air compressor. So I stayed and waited for him to return. He had stepped into the garage and then I screamed at him - he answered "yea - I see it" From the time he stepped away from where we were sitting, I realized that the sound we heard was not the his air compressor but the sound of a rattler.

Since rattlersnakes in our area is not a common thing - first my hubby thought he would get a pitchfork to move it out - I told him no way - it would be a good way to get bitten. So he got his gun and shot it. Not a good thing since he was shotting into cement. But all in all he shot it, the cat did not get bitten, and we did finish our ice cream.

We have not had any snakes in here since - and hopefully it stays that way since now we have grandchildren that will be in oujr back yard.

Lol, well if she would just call me, I'd come pick it up! Not afraid of snakes, but very MINDFUL of the poisonous ones. Not afraid of copperheads, even though they're poisonous, however, obviously, I don't pick them up either. Don't see any rattlers, though I know they are here.

I know what you mean about the bird feeders. A couple years back the neighbors had their own deck taken apart because of birdseed. What it so interesting as of this writing all the bears and mountain lions have not come in the fenceline. I do have to say I am the only one with real working Great Pry's (Too many folks treat them as house dogs) and real working llama's. Sherrye, just getting a llama is not always the answer because not all llama's will protect. It is like a good Livestock Dog - Just because their bred to do so does not mean they will. Also, training is key..

Pry's hate birds of any kind so that will help with the chickens but just know they might in not raised right also help themselves to a chicken. I have one pry that can never be around any birds for no reason. My llama has also brought in the hens when a hawk or eagle is around. But like I said in my stories about him - he is darn special...

Ugh - I'll take my chances with our bears over any kind of snakes any day! Had a big black bear on my front porch a couple of weeks ago eating all the seed out of my bird feeder. I rapped on the window and he just looked at me and went on eating until the feeder was empty!

Be careful Grace!

Oh Yes we get Bear, Mountain Lion, Antelope, Deer, Elk, Badger, Fox, Coyotoes and alike. My three Great Pry's keep most away and then I have my gun packing folks out here who will shoot at anything given the chance. I must say in 14 years here we have never lost an animal to the wild things but that does not mean I let my guard down. Life on the Funny Farm is never dull - I do live in the Wild Wild West..

Good for you!

I'm so glad rattlesnakes around here are RARE!

1badmamawolf Posted - May 17 2010 : 3:07:15 PM
The only snakes I kill out right are the rattlers, we have 'Mojave Green Rattlesnakes" here, they carry the double toxins, hemo and neuro. They are aggressive also. All other snakes are left alone unless they've gotten into my rabbits or chicken barns, then I have no choice, as if you remove them and let them go, they will come back for that easy meal. I am not afraid of snakes or any other wildlife, i have healthy respect, and use comman sense with all.

Did you say Bears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG, I think I'd rather deal with the darn alligators in the lake. LOL. This is what I often think of: What keeps a bear from breaking into a house? I mean I've seen the shows where the bears get into these parked cars at picnic sites. I'd keep a loaded gun at all times.
Be careful.

OH MY - I HATE RATTLE SNAKES - we have only had a few here on the farm - my huge bull snakes keep them at bay. I always worry that an animal might get bite. You are one brave gal but be carefull....

Snakes and Spiders are my weakness - OH AND BEARS... We have already had two sightings... It's going to be a busy summer.

Uh, Yeah. I don't know if I would be brave enough to get close enough for a shovel strike. I would probably put a bucket over it although I would have to be pretty close for that too, eh? Crud I have no idea what I would do!

Oh my goodness. I HATE snakes. They scare me to death. Spiders, bugs, bees, nothing else really bothers me all that much. But snakes? They flat out terrify me.
