Posted - May 07 2010 : 06:33:52 AM The hen in the garage has about 4 chicks so far. They started hatching yesterday morning. I had to rescue one already. It was up under the shelf. And one is a bit weak. I hope it makes it. One was barely starting to hatch. I thought I better just leave them alone for awhile. I'll check on them later. I put a water bottle and some ground up scratch for them.
I have 3 Buff hens sitting on nests also. One has about 8 eggs. The other 2 have 4 eggs. I have to check under them each day because some of the other hens are laying eggs in those nests.
My egg supply is dwindling fast! Only got 4 eggs yesterday. I better hang on to the 3 dozen I have now.

Posted - May 25 2010 : 2:56:12 PM The hen on the 6 eggs in the nester has hatched 3 so far. 2 are yellow and the one that hatched last is a chocolate brown. So cute. So when I went in to check on her awhile ago the other hen that I keep throwing off the empty nest was in the nest with her! So I got a cat carrier and put new momma and 3 chicks in that and put the stealing hen on the 3 remaining eggs. 3 is enough for 1 hen to care for. I think she'll be fine with 3.
And I don't know if the other eggs under the bench are going to hatch. The other staeling hen is still sitting on them and it's been 3 days now.

Posted - May 24 2010 : 10:00:40 AM Well, the hens under the shelf in the goat barn are hatching their eggs the last few days. I can only see 2 so far. One hen kind of thought the original hen needed help so she has some of the eggs now. They are sharing. How sweet. And the other hen on the nest in the nester has one egg that had a crack in it this morning. So hers are hatching too.
The first 2 that hatched about a month ago were doing really good. The mama hen thought they would be ok alone at night the past few nights appaerntly. So she's been roosting back up in the cedar tree. Well, this morning when I was out in the goat barn raking up mulch, I found the lighter colored chick dead under the little bench. It didn;t have any marks or blood on it. I just wonder if another hen pecked it to death or one of the goats stepped on it. Poor thing. I think it was a hen too. The other one looks like a roo, of course.
The other 2 hens are taking good care of theirs so far. They are all yellow like Buffs. The newest chicks are yellow also.
So lots going on at the farm these days!

Posted - May 12 2010 : 7:46:07 PM I will let you know when it's done and ready. I am ready to get started on it just waiting on a boat load of cash now!
These chickens are so darn cute. The garage hen and her 2 go back to the garage to bed at night. The cat room hen and her 3 have not been out of the corner yet. I really don't know of she knows what to do with these little guys. She's just a year old. I had to move the food and water away from her so she'd get up off the nest. The chicks are all over but she just sits there. I might have to run them out soon. The other 2 are old pros at raising chicks. And the other 2 are also just a year old. I found 3 hens in the nest out in the goat barn tonight. Had to run them all out and get the new eggs out. The other 2 left and the one still in there had to eat. And she got back on the nest. Silly chickens. I am just a mess with all these chicks all over the place.

Posted - May 11 2010 : 3:58:21 PM Tanna, come on over! I love to have visitors here. I am going to try to fix up our little house now that my DD and her family have moved out and make a B&B. So I will have room for about 6 people in there.
Sherrye, I know what you mean about all of them going broody. Silly birds. I had 5 broody hens. I still have the 2 in the goat barn to go. I just found another stash of eggs. 13 of them on the other side of where 1 hen is setting. So I guess she was running the other hens away from her nest. Good for her. I still find eggs under the other hen though.
I had to go feed those hens and give them water. They are not getting up for anything. They were so hungry and thirsty. Poor girls. So I will have to do that every day now. And the other little ones were poking their little heads out from under their momma a whlie ago. I just love it.

Posted - May 11 2010 : 06:43:42 AM Kristin,
I used to spend my summers in GA. I was just thinking how I miss it. Haven't been in years. When I finally get to take a visit I'll have to tell everyone it is to go find my chicken's long lost brother. I would love to see that reaction LOL :)
I would love to see some pictures of those little fuzzy babies. I just know they're all going to be adorable. LuLu would want to see her nieces and nephews too ;)

Posted - May 11 2010 : 04:58:40 AM Thanks, Marly. Ya want some? I'll soon have plenty. I am going to check on the cat room hen and see if the 4th egg has hatched. I put them all under her at the same time so they should all have hatched near the same time. But this one could have not been fertile. It's been so cold here the past few days. The new chicks haven't been out from under the momma yet. I have a heat lamp out there for the dogs and it's kind of pointed their way. So I hope they were warm enough last night.
I just love how the hens have so much fluff and feathers to keep those little ones warm. And so many places for a chickie to go. And when they poke those little tiny heads out of all those feathers. So cute. I just love that. But these will be all mixed up chickies. I have the Buff roo and the game roo. So they should be interesting chickens. Most are yellow so far. But the 2 game hens were mostly on little game eggs. But the Buffs are on the Buff eggs but some of the Buff hens run with the game roo and some with Jimmy. So I'll soon see.

Posted - May 10 2010 : 7:13:28 PM Grace, I really did not want any more chicks but how do ya stop a broody hen? And I have 5 of them going on. 2 more to go! And there's alot of eggs under the hen under the bench. I have given up trying to take the unmarked eggs away. She's too far under it to get to them now. I just hope they are not all roos. Talk about strange weather. We are having some here too.
Tanna, that is so neat that you have Jimmy's sister there with you in Texas! I love that name. They should meet some day. But they's probably not act like long lost brother and sister, so maybe not a good idea!

LuLu is named after Lucy Buffet, sister of Jimmy. She owns a restaurant in Gulf Shores, AL that is fantastic!

Posted - May 10 2010 : 5:18:01 PM Oh Kris - what a great Mother you are to your feathered and furry charges. I can just picture you there with them. Your roo sounds wonderful and a bit of a spoiled baby but that is why we love our animals so much.
I hope you keep us informed - I fought with myself to hatch some eggs this year but I was worried with all the weird weather that we would not be able to have them make it thru. So I am living the dream thru you.
Thanks for sharing....

Posted - May 10 2010 : 4:06:49 PM That's so neat to have a pet chicken. Mine all come to me when I call them and I can handle some of them. Jimmy Buffet the roo is the biggest baby. I have to feed him away from the others or the other roo will chase him. So he comes to me and I feed him. And the momma hens bring their little ones to get food too. They are so cute. And the moms are good. I love to see a hen with little chicks.
I'm glad your chicken is better, Tanna. She could have just wanted a little extra attention from you.

Posted - May 10 2010 : 2:57:48 PM Ahhh..baby chicks are the cutest! I'm excited for you Kristin!
The chicks I got a while back are almost 10 weeks old now! I can't believe it. One of my buffs (LuLu) was sick for a couple of days but with some TLC she was back to herself quickly. She got to spend time on my lap sleeping in a towel. Now she just loves to cuddle even though she's all better. First thing in the morning, when I feed them, she jumps onto my shoulder and starts grooming my hair.
Gotta love these chickies ;)

Posted - May 10 2010 : 06:53:03 AM The hen in the cat room is hatching her eggs right now. I went to check on her and heard peeps! I had to chase the other game hen out of the nest. She was trying to steal the eggs away from the Buff hen. I had to put a cage around the nest to keep her out. Bad hen. I can't see anything yet. But she had 4 eggs. I need to go out later and turn the crate over on its side so the chicks will have room to move.
There are 4 more out in the goat barn setting on eggs. I checked on the one under the bench and she had about 20 eggs under her. I had marked 6 eggs so took all the others out. Then the other hen in the nest box has just 4 and they are marked too. I go look under her every day and there are always a few extra so I take them. We should have all kinds of chickies soon. The first 2 are getting so big already. And the 2 that hatched the other day look like little fuzz balls. They look like the wond up chickie toys. They are so cute. All yellow with black stripes.
So I will have my hands full trying to keep chickens out of all my flowers and gardens now.
How are all the new chicks on ya'lls farms doing so far? I know there were several hatching out eggs awhile ago.

Posted - May 07 2010 : 7:18:01 PM I think we just ended up with 2 chicks. The rest didn't make it. But that's ok. The other hen just has 2 and they are doing great. Now I just need to get her out of the garage.

Posted - May 07 2010 : 09:20:37 AM I had to help 2 of the little chickies get out of the shell. I don't know if the one will make it. It's still half way in the shell. I think I should leave them alone. 2 of them that were hatched yesterday are doing really good and are pretty good sized. The hen is on the floor now with the other chicks. So I stuck the half wa y egg under her and the one that just hatched. I hope they all make it. There are still 3 eggs up on the shelf and they are cold.
