Posted - Apr 30 2010 : 9:02:51 PM Does anyone have a recipe for a good scratch grain mix for chickens? I want to try mixing my own, hopefully it will be more cost effective.

Posted - May 02 2010 : 10:36:56 PM We've just been using vege scaps and fresh mowed feild grass to supplement. If your town has a small privately owned grocery store you might be able to get your hands on the veges and stuff that is up on it's 'sale-by' date for using. That's what I do, anything that doesn't look fresh enough goes on the compost pile. I've even been offered a lot of stuff that's not up on it's date, just isn't selling well. Then I have free table veges! Get to know your produce guy and he'll remember you well when stuff like that comes up.

Posted - May 02 2010 : 4:17:29 PM Here is my grain recipe, that I have made up at the feed store. 2 bags of my own oats 200 lb corn 100 lb soybean 1 ruma mix 5lb 2-1 minerals 5lb salt 25lb molasses
This mix I feed to chickens, my milk cow, beef steers, and hogs. I wanted a general mix to use for all. I end up with 6-7 bags of grain

Posted - May 01 2010 : 08:06:28 AM I would just have wheat, barley, oats and sunflower seeds. I think I might just do this too and get away from the corn now. Maybe try to keep enough of my corn for the winter for them. Also if they are kept up in a coop you might want to add grit. Also scraps and lots of green stuff.
