I'm about to turn in my daughter's 4h poultry showing form, and thought I'd check the standards for her breeds. Well one that she's entering, we've always called a black brahma, but now lookiing it up, they're supposed to have white penciling on the neck feathers--here's a pic of hers--most definitely NOT white! SO. . .what do we have? The female of the pair is sitting on a nest, and looks quite like the standard. Our 4H leader knows nothing about chickens, so any help appreciated. Thanks!

I do not think that gold/partridge is recognized in the US. I am not even sure if they are available here! But, scroll down on here and you can see some photos of these colors.

And, of course, they could be a cross. It sure would help to know where the FFA got them, lol. If they came from a hatchery, you could ID them that way, too. Chickens can be so hard, due to the fact there are many color varieties in one breed and they all start looking alike, lol. But, he does have that cushion-type comb, so....

Amanda, They're bigger than silkies, but much smaller than the standard breed RIR's or barred rock. . .
What is a gold/partridge brahma? I'll try to look those up. . . are they recognized as "dark" brahma or is it recognized as a separate color--I thought it was either dark, light, or buff? |

He is very similar to a gold or partridge Brahma, she looks like a black Brahma. How large are they?

I was thinking Black australorp for the black hen also. But it could also be a black jersey giant.

Well, good question. She was given the pair of them from our local FFA club, with the intent that she show them at the fair for 4H. (her first year). SO--we didn't buy them, didn't hatch them, maybe we're in trouble? Hope not! I looked at the welsummer pic and it has a regular comb, which our boy does not. He does seem to have the traits of the brahmas. She was told by the ffa kids that they were a pair of black brahmas. The male didn't have the brown color when we first got them, only as he matured. |

So you're asking about the top picture, the one with the orange-ish head?
Well the first thing that came to mind was it looks extremely close to our rooster Brownie, which we were told was a Welsummer (or at least partially).
Did you hatch these? Were they "purebred" eggs? I was told by a few people when we were trying to figure out what we had for breeds that its nearly impossible to get true purebred eggs anymore - and that's why its so hard to figure out what people have. But that's just what the farmers down the road told me. ;) So who knows? I hope you figure out what you have...let us know what you figure out.
