I am wondering about the bag. First time, is it always a firm (hardish) bag? When and how does the doe learn to let her milk down when being milked? How long does it take to develop the longer teats? This is all new and there isn't a lot of information about it. Thanks for any help!

Thank you --- I will continue to work with her, I just don't want to make a mistake which will cost her and me too. She is such a nice doe. I have been with animals my whole life but this is the first time I have freshened one. Kris

Hi Kris. That's my name too! Each doe is different. I have a doe and had both her daughters. She has huge almost cow like udders and not very long teats and she's 6 years old. When she is full I can only milk one side at a time. Now her daughters are very different. One has the smallest pencil sized teats and a very compact udder. I sold her last year. The other one I still have. She has perfect udder and teats. But her milk is not good. They are all Lamancha. But Sadie, the last one, is half Toggenburg. Then I have Abby, another Lamancha, that has perfect long teats and a great udder. Very east and fast to milk. I can get my whole hand around her teats. She's 7. Then Sandy, a Nubian, again with perfect udder and teats and easy and fast to milk. And I can get my whole hand around her teats too. The others I cannot.

So each goat is so different and may never have the nice long teats or be easy to milk. It took a long time to milk out the doe with the little teats and her mother with the big udder and small teats. It wears me out til they are half empty. I have heard that doe kids will be like their mothers. These are the only 2 does that I have that I kept.

I hope this makes sense. She may never have those nice long teats that you want. And being her first year you'll just have to keep working with her. Next year may be better.
