I've been 'chickenless' for 3 years. But, that will soon change. I ordered "Buckeyes" - very rare breed and they have all the virtues I like and need. While researching breeds online (I decided I would get only one breed this time), I happened on the above webpage that gives very detailed information on many breeds. Just thought I would share it.
Buckeyes are a very rare 'heirloom' breed...they're exceptionally friendly, very docile, hardy, good free-rangers, lay a light brown egg and are good meat birds too. They are the color of the old-fashioned deep mahogany brown-red Rhode Island Red. The other breed I was on the fence over was Salmon Faverolles and Wheaten or Black Copper Marans. I've had many breeds of chickens before, but never Buckeyes. I'm excited! I'm also having a new coop built...the sort that moves (wheels about the size of wheelbarrow tires). It'll be a made of homemade lumber and recycled hardware etc.

My rooster is a Black Jersey Giant. He was given to us, his name is Jersey Joe! LOL!! He has a REALLY nice disposition and he isn't too hard on the Barred Rock hens. He takes good care of them too, always pointing out the best treats! :)

Shery, This is the weblink I used to help me decide what kind of chicks to get!!! Isn't it a great page?
I know I still want some heirloom welsummer's, and some Jersey Giants, but unless I happen across just a couple this spring or summer, it will have to wait until next year.
I have to go check out the Buckeyes now!

I love reading up on chicken stuff like this.
I wonder if our mystery rooster "Wrigly" is a Buckeye. He is also a deep mahagoney and has the best disposition.
He appeared in a chick shipment that should have been all red and black sexlink last year. He kept hopping the fence and I kept hand grabbing him (gently) and tossing him over. He never really did protest all that much at being handled. One day when I had hands on him, he was still kind of young, and I realized the dark red glossy neck feathers were alittle too long to be a hen, and yes indeed, thsoe were some very large wattles to be a hen.
sure enough....rooster. But I was too thrilled at the prospect of having a red rooster, having him be nice enough to not be flogging any humans, and failry gentle with the ladies too
I call him Wrigly as in the "Big Red" flavored chewing gum by the Wrigly company ha ha I know...........
