I don't live on a farm, but I do live in the country which leaves me victim to animal/pet "drop offs". I love cats, but someone left me 2 of them in my driveway the other day. I have 3 house cats currently and with two 9 year olds and a husband, my house is getting a little full.
Here's the interesting part. When the cats were dropped off, one was in a box with air holes, food and a pillow. And the other was in a cat carrier. Now, what if we had been on vacation? That cat would've starved...do people feel better about themselves when they leave the pets with food and a pillow? The poor cats were so distraught and skittish.

I'm trying to get pictures of these two cats, but they are skittish little things. They probably don't trust people anymore - who can blame them? They eat and then leave...

Two of our three cats were strays from the neighborhood. I caught Stanley when he was a couple months old! I think he thinks I am his mama! He looks at me with those adoring eyes and talks to me! I agree...I don't understand the thinking (or lack there of) of animal care.

We have over 50 cats here at our place, most have been abandoned or dropped off. We love them all, and hope we can give them a good life. Three of our five dogs have been dropped off also. "Jenny" was left here 5 years ago, and had 10 pups two weeks after arriving at our house. We still have her and one of her pups. Our newest addition was left just three weeks ago, along a roadside fence to our cow pasture. A very sweet three month old Border Collie. We also gain a few horses each year when we gather them in the fall. People think you won't notice a few more in your bunch. It is very sad. Just glad we have a place for them all, and enough food and love to go around~

You would be surprised by what people will do to horses. It is bad for cats and dogs but horses have it way worse. I have seen things that give me nightmares for weeks. And judges will convict, set a fine or probation and the people just go out and get more. I never knew until recently that people will abandon them, in a paddock with no food or water and they can't get out. Or tie them up to a tree for years with water just barely out of reach 90 percent of the time. I have thought of writing a book about all the awful things I have seen and how the horses can survive. But, It might make me crazy trying to think about it all again.

I get all of the strays that I can catch spayed or neutered . I buy more cat food than I can really afford and have several places around for them to get under or out of the weather. We all do the best that we can with so many animals left at our doorsteps. I'm so heartened to see so many other people with a true love of animals.

It is completely sad to see the battered and scrawny horses at the rescue places. How could ANYONE abandon or abuse a horse ??? Or any animal for that matter =(

I'm trying to get pics up on my blog of some of my rescues =)

All my animals are rescues too. My little quarter-horse Dunbar is a stray. Did you know that people dump horses. Absolutely there are people that should not be allowed to have animals. The appalling thing is that a lot of judges won't forbid people to own them even after they have been convicted of animal cruelty. It is already getting worse due to the economy and it is predicted to get worse before it gets better.

Could you post pix of them on this site? Our cats have always been strays or cats people couldn't keep anymore. Right now we have one that an old lady on my husband's mail route couldn't afford to feed and a stray that was dropped off at a Bed & Breakfast we stayed at.

My husband's mother feeds strays, but she has had to start trapping them and taking them to a shelter because it has gotten too expensive with the food, kittens and vet bills.

Bless you for taking in the poor homeless kitties.

You know I had never really thought about it, but every cat my family has ever had was a drop off. They were all the sweetest the things ever, and believe me we have had quite a few cats! Teresa, taking care of all those kitties the way you do just about made me cry. What a kind and wonderful thing for you to do.The world needs so many more people with hearts like yours.

Here's hoping and praying that you keep the cats, or at least find them a good home. Like an barn!!!! I'm happy to hear that you are feeding the cats.
My outside cats came in with the flood during hurricane Rita in 2005. They are still outside cats. They are just letting me pick them up; very carefully.
Keep me posted on those sweet little kitties.

Most of my critters have been strays. The dog I have now was a stray. My sister in law works at a pipeyard and people just dump dogs there.

There is a special place in H*** for people who dump animals.

I have cats dumped all the time. I have found homes for a couple. The wild ones I just feed. I can't just not feed them. Vicki

Marly,
They're hanging around my house. They love to hang out on the porch of my husbands shed. They come up to the house when it's time for food and water.

I have a dog, Luck Dog, who was dropped off by my house 18 years ago. I have five outside cats that came in with a flood after a hurricane. No one claimed them. All of the animals I have had were drop off ones. I get extremely upset when people do this. You don't want to know what I think of these people. My inside cat, Zoe, was dumped 19 years ago. In my opinion, there are some people, who should NOT own or have an animal. All of my animals have brought me such love. They make me laugh every day! They are all happy dogs and cats.
Did you keep the kitties?

I have about 40 cats in various stages of wild on my property (barn cats), and about 30 of them were dumped and ended up here, the others were born here to those that were dumped. I trap them, spay and neuter them, give them their shots, and turn them loose. I have buckets all around that I keep full of dry cat kibble and a water bucket next to each food bucket.I don't have the heart to take them to the local shelter, they would just be euthanized, so they live out their days sleeping on a pile of straw in the sun, curled up on an old blanket in one of the lofts, chasing mice and bugs, and just being cats.

I'm happy to see all of you pet and animal lovers out there. The cats that were dropped off are hanging out around my yard/woods. They come around for food and water and then go a wonderin'. I'm glad its spring heading into summer, I know they won't get too cold. :-)

We live on a road and a long dirt drive just out of town and it breaks my heart to see all of the animals unloved and casually discarded. People probably think of me as "the crazy cat lady", I find so many kittens and cats dumped on my doorstep, and the occasional dog too! I have a few cats that are just plain dysfunctional and not adoptable. If the shelter is full( we have a no kill shelter) I get them fixed and feed them out side. I am a big softie and can't turn anything away. I wish the people would think REALLY hard before getting a pet.

we have had several dropoffs here-especially cats. it surprises me how inhumane people can be sometimes-present company excluded. thank goodness you came home and they were still okay-maybe you can find them a good home if you can't keep them.

I use to work for a Horse Rescue and we went to lunch one day and when we got back someone had tied a pony to the back side of one of our trailers. It was 100 degrees outside and the pony couldn't get to food or water. We were lucky we parked where we did when we came back or we wouldn't have found poor Tabet. He was such a sweet pony. My daughter rescues small mammals and she has come home several times with plastic bags tied to her door knob with ferrets, mice, hamsters etc. in them. I just don't believe what people think is ok.

My son recenly found a puppy, in a dog crate, on the side of a country road. It was a fairly warm day, and the puppy had no water. The local no kill shelter took it in, but what are people thinking? What if no one noticed a puppy in that crate, or like you said, what if you were on vacation? I wish people would be more responsible to begin with, Carol
