Mom and I were out in the coop last night after I locked the chickens up for the night and we were noticing how shiny they all are. Brownie has this amazing sheen to his feathers...he's just iridescent and gorgeous. The hens, although they've only been here a week, seem to be getting shinier and have a sheen to them we didn't notice when they first came.
Is that normal? Is that from what they are eating? Is it just because they are so gosh darn spoiled? They just seemed to be kind of blah when they came (the hens...and Brownie, but I'm assuming that was because he was a drowned rat when he showed up) and now its like they've blossomed into these shiny, gorgeous creatures in the week or so they've been here. Mom wants to know why...so we can keep doing whatever we're doing right!!

Fun post!
I have a few hens that shine. They look black, but in full sun, you can see irridescent purple and green. It's beautiful
And we have our red rooster whose feathers are so glossy they just beg to be touched |

I have a couple shiny chickens and a bunch of matte chickens:) I think it is just in the breed, but the shiny ones sure are pretty!!

Thanks ladies! I guess I just was wondering because when we got them they didn't look like that. I was assuming we were doing what we were supposed to if they were shining up! Thanks for confirming!

Chickens that are healthy, should have shiny, well preened feathers, so, what ever you are doing, just keep doing it.

What breed are they?? Chickens who are healthy have a natural oil on their feathers - that is what helps them with cold weather and rain/snow. Also some breeds have more of a shine because of the color of the feathers - such as Blacks Star chickens they show greens and blues on their black feathers that is just magical to watch. Healthy Chickens are such a blessing to behold - give them a treat from me and enjoy each moment with your sweet ones.
