All the details are of course on my blog! Check it out!

Have you ever butchered a chicken? It was so much easier than the horror stories I had heard!

Congrats on a job well done! Nice post, good pictures.
I was worried about my boys when we did the turkey, but my oldest thought it was neat and loved helping. I think it's good for them to know where their food comes from. That even the ones at the store once looked similar to the chickens running around the yard. It's a fact of life.
We're expecting our first batch of cornish cross in April, 20 of the little buggers, so they'll get plenty of experience.

I've been butchering fowl for 13 years or so. I got a bunch of Buff Orpington chickens a couple of weeks ago that will end up in the freezer. All but 2, that is. The actual hatcheting off the head (I'm an ax murderer!!) is intense, but once that's done, it's just meat to me. I do name most of my chickens, just not names of family members! I did that the first time I had chickens and it seemed creepy to be butchering a chicken named after my brother!

Thanks Kris for lightning the subject a bit lol. I can see my Daughter helping after she gets comfy with it she loves to get messy!
Julie Def wont name them. We have 9 that are pets and when we got the first three my youngest wouldnt eat chicken for a month! He was afraid that they were his! We got in the habit of when I made chicken for a meal he wouild run out and count his chickens then he would eat his supper. he is ok with it now. I think we will have to explain what is happening to them, and re-inforce the food not pets thing to them. Im sure we will be ok. I told the hubby that when we start this we will def start with bigger birds from our friends farm that wont be here long before butchering day. Loved the blog pics!!
Thank you all for the info I apprieciate it

I suggest that you use a killing cone or hold them. Letting them flop can bruise the meat and make it tough.

Jennifer - my suggestion is DONT NAME THEM! And tell yourself from day 1 that they arefor food. Don't view them as "pets". I have 5 that I see as pets. I won't ever eat them!

Jennifer, my grands love helping. I remember the last time we did it and they were here. Several of the chickens would flop around after being beheaded and they would all jump up in the truck screaming and acting silly. It was so funny. Not to make light of something like this, but kids really don't seem to have a problem with it. Now some will for sure and swear off meat for life but they get over it. It's just a fact of life and something everyone should know how to do. I really don't mind at all. It was hard with that first one. But I can do it in a minute now now problem.

And we were all covered with blood! Looked like we were mass murderers here. It was messy. I don't know how ya'll didn't get it all over you. Especially the one holding the bird. And my friend had to drive to the daycare to pick up her daughter looking like that!

I have a killing cone. I think we will have to use that next time.

Just one little warning. Be very careful when cutting around the anal area. If you cut the thing that has all the poop in it you have just ruined the whole bird. That's the one thing you have got to be very careful doing. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Great job Julie! My husband says he will not be able to stand it if the chicken runs all over the yard with his head off, so he's going to get one of those cone things! I will tell him that your rooster behaved himself! :)
I have said that if I have to kill them, I won't be able to eat them(don't mind the rest), but I know I will have to try it at some point. Oh well.... it is a few months aways!

Great job! The blog post is fantastic. It was nice to read as we will be butchering for the first time this year, and it was nice to hear someone say its not as bad as people make it out to be. Nice post!

We butcher often now.Recently we did a rooster and turkey!
But two years ago my hubby had never done it and I had watched and helped often. So I had an amish friend show us how they do it. Well we have been doing it ever sense. Sometimes we kin them and sometimes we pluck. I akways gut them, hubby can rip or chop heads off but not gut them!!!So funny!!
Enjoy all the fresh homegrown meat ladies. It is a good thing!

God Bless

I have done it alot...still hate it but do it. Good for you! It IS a very good skill to have. Turkeys and geese are much harder for me...I guess I need more upper arm strength. I prefer to have someone else to the killing. The rest I don't mind as much. But..last year I did both.

Good for you, Julie! It really is not that bad, is it? I have butchered many chickens and turkeys, too. But the first one I did was the hardest. My friend that came to help had to holler at me to go ahead and do it! I kept raising the hatchet up and down and I guess she got aggravated at me. I finally did it and after that it was a piece of cake. And they are so good. Let us know what you do with it. I am giving you a virtual pat on the back!
