Does anyone know anything about cat breathing difficulty? Like asthma? My 2 year old kitty is just sitting there breathing hard like she's been running. I am getting freaked out.
She had been coughing and we thought it was a hairball. So we bought a hairball remedy and have been giving it to her; and she was still coughing.
I have a cough also right now, because of allergies. I wonder if this could be her problem also?
She has a great appetite, a nice coat, no runny nose or eyes, none of that. Just the coughing and now this.
I am getting sacred. Any thoughts on what this could be before I scurry her off to the vet?
I hate taking her to the vet; she has anxiety issues....... but her butt is going to go real soon, here; unless she stops this.

Keep us posted, Hosanna...most of the things that pop into my head that could cause the coughing and odd breathing aren't life-threatening with treatment, so don't worry too much. :) Asthma is a good possibility...

Perhaps she's got something caught in her throat to cause the coughing?? Does she paw at her mouth? Drool? Does her food fall out of her mouth when she eats (swallowing issues)?? If the coughing is accompanied by any of those signs, I'd take her in much sooner...she probably has something lodged in her throat.

I doubt it's upper respiratory...the out-of-the ordinary breathing would be accompanied or caused by congestion...

Have you tried covering her carrier with a towel so she can't see out? We do this with feral cats to calm them during transport... maybe it would help her if you take her into the vet? :)

Yes, I don't want to panic you. Like I said it could be an allergy. Of course it could also be a hairball issue or asthma. However things like heart worms in cats (which is fairly rare but do happen) can mimic asthma. Here is an article about it: http://www.felineasthma.org/reldisease/index.htm there is also feline asthma information there for you. Keep us updated! Poor kitty :(

Hosanna:
I hope your cat is doing better. Keep us posted. I would take her to the vet now.

Well, she took a nap and was better; she ate something and wanted to go outside; so I let her go out and I've been keeping an eye on her as she plays in the yard. Now she is sitting in her kitty pavillion, out in the garden, resting.
She had a coughing spell again a little while ago. My husband still thinks it's a hairball issue; but I HAVE TO KNOW for sure; so early next week I have to take my little boy kitty to get neutered, and I am going to take her with me then for a checkup. Of course, if anything serious happens between now and then we'll have to do an emergency call. She goes into a panic when she has to ride in a vehicle... I am not looking forward to that....
I looked at some videos on You tube of cats with asthma and what she is doing is real similar. I think she's got asthma.
They are easily treated with a AeroKat inhaler and meds. So if that is what we have to do, we'll do it..... I will let everyone know what the Vet says next week.

She could be developing an upper respitory infection, which needs to be vet treated, don't wait to long, it can make the differance between life and death. There is also a possibility of throat polops, the are not that uncomman in cats. Good luck and let us know.

It could just be allergies. My mom's cat was allergic to grass. Of course, it could be something more serious so a visit to the vet is in order. Let us know what they say!
