So no one around here has chickens, but its downpouring and we found a rooster sitting on the side of the road shivering. We caught it and brought it in the house. He's sopping wet. We have him in a giant dog crate right now...what do we do? Do we need to help him dry off his feathers? Will he take care of that himself? He looks like a drowned rat and he's shivering.

The kids are SOOO excited.

Also, why would a rooster have twine around his foot? One of his feet had twine tied around it (on purpose) and he was dragging the rope with him.

Amy,

Thank you for taking in the poor little rooster. They are close to my heart, as combined we have close to 100 hens and roosters on our farm. The roosters are so funny as they truly all have a personality of their own. Watching them and the hens and the kittens and dog run around is hilarious. The way it sounds, God knew exactly where to send the poor little fellow to. As we can all see he is being well taken care of!

It took our Roo a while to crow. And he doesn't crow constantly, or even at a set time. Occasionally I hear him early in the morning, but he doesn't usually start crowing until I go out to feed. Then he follows me and crows some. Let him settle in and I'll be he starts crowing.
Good Luck with the incubator! I want one....

He's doing great. We let him spend yesterday out in one of the dog runs (without dogs, of course) and he thought he was something else. Talking way more, but still no crowing. Was NOT happy when we brought him back inside for the night. I think he actually swore at us a little. We put him out again this morning and he's happy as a clam. Or a rooster, I guess. ;) We have taken to calling him Mr. Brownie Ba-gawk. In exactly a week the barn will be fixed and we can move him out to his new home with some ladies...this is SO exciting!!! And...I will post about this elsewhere when I have a little more time (its my son's 7th birthday today), but my husband built me an incubator yesterday (surprise!!) and we are getting eggs in the next couple days too!! WAHOOOOOO. Life is good!!!!!

Margaret, that might work for sure! Just a little incentive for him to show what he's got. He looks old enough to be crowing.

How's he doing today, Amy?

What a lucky boy. I have to wonder if somthing was done to him to prevent him from crowing. I have 3 roosters and they all crow like crazy, all day(luckily they are not in my bedroom:). You are a special person for taking in this wayward traveler. Now maybe if you got him some female company he would have something to crow about.

Amy, he's a he as far as I can tell. And he looks old enuf to crow. Maybe he has larygitis and a cold frm being soaked to the bone. They can get sick. Maybe you could give hime some Gatorade if you have any. I use electrlyes from the feed store but gatorade is the same thing. He may just need a pick-me-up. Good luck with him.

He's still sleeping.
I'm assuming he's a rooster.
Do all roosters crow?
If he doesn't crow...does that mean he is a she?

Oh my gosh, he is so sweet. Chattery and lovey and so beautiful. And so tame! The cats were even lovin' him up! I think he's a RIR or NHR...I plan on posting something about him in one of my blogs later. When I get it up, I'll post in here!

LOL!!!

I know I shouldn't be laughing but what are the odds of that??

That is so funny...he is very lucky to have you rescue him!

Ingenious idea about the blow dryer--I bet that felt soooo good to him!

Keep on the lookout though he might have a few hens trailing behind...

Thank you. We did end up putting a blowdryer on low on him and he's pretty dry now. He fell asleep on my lap. :) I think I'm in love. I hope he makes it!

You could use a blowdryer on low for him. Make sure you give hime some grain and grit and water. The twine is on his leg because some people who raise game roosters or fighting roosters tie them by one leg and then to their barrel. He may have been dumped. We had several dumped on us with ties on their legs. Good luck.

Oh poor little roo...:(
I have no idea what to do for him, I'm still new to chickens, I guess if he doesn't mind you drying him off some, you should.
It sounds like whoever had him, tied him up to something to keep him from wandering off. The poor thing.
Bless you Amy and the kids for rescuing him. :)
