Hi Farmgirls, I thought this was the best artical about talking to your animals. I don't know about you but I love to talk to my animals. I even go so far as to read them stories. I love Fias Co Farm and they have wonderful articals, addvice, herbal treatment, care, etc. for animals.I bought some of her herbal wormer for my goats, rabbits, and dog and they love it!! Talk to your animals
Most animals lovers don't need to be told this, we love our furry (or scaly) friends and talk to them all the time. But what I am suggesting is that you really look into their eyes and really talk to them. Speak to them in full sentences like you believe they understand you, because if you give them the chance they will. They can understand much more then you know.
When you have to treat your animals because they are ill, explain what you are doing and why you are doing it to them. Explain that you love them and want them to get better, and you are doing what you are doing to help them.
If you have to give some sort of unpleasant treatment, don't just jump out of nowhere, surprise your animals and force the thing down his throat. That is what is traumatic, not the actual thing being forced into their mouth but the surprise and unexpected action of the human.
Mable, our diabetic basset hound must have insulin shots twice a day. She doesn't like the shots (who would), but when it is time for them we say, "Mable, it's time for your shot. We're sorry, good girl, but you have to have the shot or you'll get sick." She does not run away, but waits for her shot. We say, "Here's you shot" <give the shot> Then we very enthusiastically say "Good Mable, yeah, you had your shot, now you get your vitamin pill. YEAH." And the we give her her vitamin which she thinks is a very special treat.

We don't have any children so our dog is our girl :) Every morning we have "Good Morning" where I pet and hug her, then she gets her collar on, goes outside and comes in for breakfast. In the evening we have 'Cuddle Time" where we sit on the floor and cuddle.
I agree with explaining things to our animals and when I discipline I make sure she looks into my eyes and knows that she was bad. Of course punishment doesn't last long :)

Interesting article, Channah...I have a cat who I swear understands English perfectly.  He was an orphaned kitten who I raised on a bottle, I got him when he was only about 5 days old, so it would make sense that he'd at least be very familiar with certain tones of my language, if not actual words. One day I'd let him in the living room to play since I could supervise him (he's not usually allowed in the room with the sofa because he'll potty on it)...when it was time to put him out, I walked out of the kitchen and said 'Ok, let's round 'em up and move' em out!'...at this point I hadn't even looked his direction, or given any indication that I was actually going to put him out, but he started yowling and fussing at me...like he'd understood every word and was protesting the injustice of it all. They're smart, to be sure!

My husband has always taken the time and been patient with our animals. He has a horse that was beaten by the previous rider, my husband and this horse are like one soul when they ride and how they understand each other. This horse actually knows what to do before my husband. I cannot explain it, but once you watch it and listen to my husband talk to him it is truly amazing.

Channah, that's a good article. Thanks. I do talk to mine all the time. I have already had long talks with the goats about they better have girls this year. I even talk to the babies! But that's a good thing to do instead of just stabbing them with needles and shoving pills down their throats. Tell them what's going on. I do believe they understand. And they can feel sympathy as well.

Not only do I talk to my animals but I once had a parakeet who told me to "Stop it!" when I was making a noise he didn't like. It was the first and only time he used that phrase.

I love the part...."really look into their eyes and really talk to them" Sometimes I get chills when I'm talking to our animals.....they look like they're really listening and understanding.
When I talk to the goats, they usually come up and give me nibbles on my face. Their eyes are so soft and velvety looking. The pig just stops everything and looks right into my eyes as if he is studying me. Then he hops a little jig and takes off running. The chickens are hilarious with their jerking heads. When I hold one in particular and talk to her, she stops her head and cocks it to one side looking up at me. Rabbits are a lot like cats....they act as if they are the supreme royalty. They "let" you talk to them. It's as if they're saying, "You're so lucky to have me". Conversations with the dogs can be like talking to your children..."I love you so much", "Be quiet! that noise is driving me nuts!" , "Aw, you're so pretty" , "Who made this mess!?!"
I think I'll go talk to all of them right now.
One of the best compliments from one of my daughters: "Moma, you smell good...like dirt." |
