Hi Ladies, I can't remember who told me this but someone told be that I could worm my goats with apple cider vineger. How much should I give them? Do you put it in water? Is it ok to give to a 5 day old baby goat? What is a good wormer to give to my baby goat? I have Safeguard dewormer. Will that work? I would really like to use an all natural wormer for her.

Better to disbud before they are an inch long, the longer you wait the harder it is on the kid and you have to burn longer. Most new kid raisers wait too long! As I'd mentioned before Fiascofarm website has some good pictures and instructions. If the horn is sticking up an inch it would be hard to get the iron to the skull and reach the area around it that needs to be burned. It is the area around the bottom of the horn that needs to be burnt a copper color. The longer one waits the harder it is on the kid and there's more chances of scurring. If the horn buds are up too high or round, then one has to wire saw them off(there will be blood) and burn a larger area. I do pop them off and cauerize again as Kris mentioned. The iron is hot! The first one is the hardest, but just do it .One more thing; depending on your iron's wattage, it may need to heat up between each horn. best wishes!!!!! |

I just now went and got my disbudding iron from my friend up the road who borrowed it last year. I am going to attempt to do it myself this year. I have watched a friend do it now for 5 years so I think I may be able to do it myself. I think I can, I think I can... I will try it. But I might not be able to. And I don't want to hurt anyone on my first try. Maybe I'll let my friend let me do one while she's here. That might work better for the poor little kids.
I wish you luck, Channah. At least you only have one to do. And those irons get really hot so be careful. The way my friend does it is burns off the very tips and twists the horn off. Then goes and puts the hot iron on the exposed part of the stub til it's down to the root. Then sprays with Furall spray. You might get your dad or brothers to hold the kid. They can get really feisty.
I bought my iron used when I bought a few goats. She was getting out of the goat business and sold all her stuff.

Thank you Laurie!! No I have not disbudded Ebony yet. I still need to grab an iron this weekend and I read that you disbud when they are an inch long. But I will as soon as I get an iron.

Hi Channah, So happy all is going well with your new baby, she is beautiful! You said you had Safegaurd wormer. Safegaurd will work fine, but usually most goat keepers double the dose. It is very safe. We use Safegaurd for the does at the dairy when they freshen and we are on an herbal program all year. I disbudded some kids for a friend today, and wonder if you got your little doe done yet? Good luck!! laurie |

that is what I was thinking Alee. On Fias Co farms they worm there kids at 3 months of age with there all natural herbal goat wormer ( I ordered some of that). I guess I will have to make a decision. Thank you for your help ladies!

Channah- you worm the doe, not the kid. Their systems are still a bit fragile and a wormer administered right to them would be a bit harsh- but they do get some benefits from their mom being wormed

Channah, you really need to something now before ya'll can start drinking the milk. That's why I worm right after kidding. The day after is when the worms are more active and the best time to kill them. Also I never drink the milk til after 2 weeks. Most wormers have a milk withdrawal time so it's good to worm while you aren't drinking the milk. Otherwise you have to wait again.
I just put about a cup of ACV in a gallon of water. I would think the kids aren't drinking water yet so it'd be fine. Also most water containers are too tall for kids to get into right away anyway. I usually keep ACV in the water during the summer and fall. Good for all the animals.

I use VermX, an organic wormer, find a distributor close to you on line. They recommend NOT using it on kids under 3 months. I give it to my does in their morning feed, for 7 days, once a month.
I use ACV with garlic for all of my poultry. 3-4 cloves of garlic to 1 gallon of ACV (I have a jug in use and one marinating), I put 1/3 cup to 5 gallons of water or 1 Tablespoon in a gallon of water. The reason I don't give ACV to my goats anymore, is because we have installed lickers for them and the lickers are installed straight into the water line.
