I think I have probably lost about at least 8 pounds the last several weeks just trudging through all this mud. I don't have to even unzip my new pants anymore. I am NOT complaing about that at all. I am just SO TIRED of all this MUD! Everywhere there are animals there is a mud pit to get to them and feed them. And this is 2 times every day plus all the egg hunts throughout the day. Then having to carry 5 gallon buckets of water through all the mud and sinking up past my ankles. Man, I am just pooped. Plum worn out. I can't even imagine what solid dry ground feels like anymore. I am slipping and sliding and even fell a few times. What a mess. And these poor critters. Goats and cows up to their knees in mud someplaces. I would love to have concrete walkways and pads for them.

I know it's winter and all. But I really can't remember it being so messy before. It will get better, won't it?

I need a nap now.

It's a beautiful day here. Sun's shining and the sky is blue. The critters seem happy to be in the sun for a change. The roofs are just dripping with the melting snow. I have buckets trying to catch all that free water! My mom called last night and said they were getting snow. They are 50 miles north of Savannah.

Christine, I know what you mean. I do believe it's poopy mud, too. I know that's what I'm walking in at the calf stall. Nasty. So I have been washing my boots off when I come in. And where I have the water trough for my cows is in knee deep mud. Poor girls hate to go there. So I try to keep a 5 gallon bucket moved around for them.

And Kansas' teacher even gave cards to the kids with those packs of flavored sugar and the sugar sticks. I can't believe she would do that. Her who always sends notes home saying Kansas won't sit still, she's bouncing off the walls. And gives her packs of pure sugar! Please! That's crazy.

I know we will have nice weather one day. But we are supposed to get more snow Sun. or Mon. So don't start washing horse feet yet, Kelly! I need to trim goat feet but don't want to touch them right now.

I do like the frozen ground better to walk on. I get things done much faster. But do prefer dry ground.

THe snow seem to be melting this morning, we got about 2 inches, the sun is shining and it just glistens off the snow, it is so pretty and bright! Sunshine makes me happy! Abby had a Valentine's party too, and she got lots of candy and cards, not to mention all the sweets at the party. Sugar doesn't seem to effect her unless it is at night. Anyway, i hope dry weather is to come, My poor horses feet are so caked with mud, I feel the need to wash them, but whats the point?
farm~maid Posted - Feb 12 2010 : 2:51:02 PM
Kris, hope the weather has improved for you. Is the mud freezing? The snow has moved on and it's just COLD here. But, the bright spot of the day was that the sun was shining all day. We haven't seen much of the sun.

About that mud.......I like to refer to it as mud. But, sometimes I have to correct my DH that we all now it's really just poop! At least that's what it seems to be when it gets that deep and all the cows are in one area. Not a pleasant thing. Thank heaven for knee high waterproof boots.

We tossed around the idea of concrete pads, but I'm hesitant as I don't like seeing concrete anymore than I have to. But, it's been terribly muddy this past year and we might have to resort to something. I know it would be better for the animals.

My grandson's school did Halloween parties, but nothing for Valentine's Day. I'd rather see them celebrate Valentine's Day. They did make hats and traded cards today.

Kelly, school here let out at 11:30 again today. There was nothing happening then. We went to Ft. O. and I could see a few flakes coming down. Then had to go up Lookout Mt. to get the other 2 grands. They go to Dade Co. and they let out at noon. Got up there at 1 and all the way up it's snowing and sticking to the roads. And those are nothing but curvy windy roads up there. It was covered by the time we got back down. And we have about an inch so far here. The 2 older kids are outside on the trampoline. I just REfed the goats, cats, dogs and chickens. My black calf is now a white calf. And it's COLD out there. And we ran out of propane last night, too. But we have central heat. I just hope power doesn't go off.

Rae, I talked to my mom who lives near Savannah, Ga. and she said they are supposed to get 2-4" tonight. Even Fla. I wish this was in Mn.

And WHY do the schools have Valentines parties and give kids bags of candy like it's Halloween? Good grief! That is so ridiculous. Kids are bouncing off the walls already.

1-4 inches sounds so funny to me as that is nothing and we just keep on going. When they talk 12 or more inches we think about staying home, maybe.

We didn't get snow yesterday, we should get 1-4 inches today!!! I bet it is coming down there as we speak. That silly Kansas! She should know better than to even open a window this time of year!! HAHA! It is amazing what goes through the mind of a 6 year old! We had to cancell our trip to Callaway Gardens for this weekend due to the weather, I am bummed, we rescheduled for spring break, which in reality is a better time of year to go down there especially since we were bringing our bikes. Well, I need to get finished getting ready to head over to the school, Abby's class is having a Valentine's party today.
Talk to you soon : )

Hey Kelly. I got it. I love it. It's the cutest little fabric postcard with quilted hearts on the front. I am going to frame it. Thank you so much. It looks like you put a lot of work into it, too. Very thoughtful. I feel very special.

Are you getting snow yet? It's snowing here and it is sticking but it's a dry snow. And it's very windy. And freezing. My chickens are not coming out. I guess they're afraid they'll blow away. I was wondering why it was so cold in the house last night. And this morning at the foot of the stairs it was just freezing. I keep the door shut and the heater vents are off when no one is up there. So I went up and it got colder and colder. I went to the other side of the room and a window is wide open. It faces West and the wind was just blowing in. I guess Kansas opened it Monday. It's been wide open since then. She was not here at all yesterday. That bad girl! I can'r believe I didn't catch that before this.

You should see my friend's new horse. I went yesterday to get some hay from her and I saw this horse head sticking out of her barn. I went in and saw the tallest horse I've ever seen. I thought he was standing a little higher in the stall but he wasn't. She said he's almost 16 hands high. His withers was as tall as me. Big horse. She's training him for dressage riding. He's beautiful.

I am ready for spring and summer. Although it's so much easier to walk on frozen solid mud. I don't have to wash my boots before I come in. And I had to do some more fence repair work first thing this morning. I didn't see Mazie in the pasture then I heard her out in the field. So I had to go fix the hole she got out of. Again. She's like a giant monster cow. Good grief. She may end up in the freezer soon.

Kris, I know exactly how you feel! I am so tired of this weather too, and the mud!!! My horses are so muddy, everytime I brush them out it rains again! This has to be the worst winter we have had in a long time. My hens are ok, they can go into their house or in the barn, they don't seem to care, but there is mud everywhere! Something about this soil, it's just soppy. I tried to put down hay and it just gets sucked in! I am sooo ready for warm weather and sunshine!
Try to have a nice day! Oh, I sent you a little something, let me know if you get it :)
kristin sherrill Posted - Feb 09 2010 : 11:28:51 AM
Julie, I can just imagine cows with floaties!! How funny that would be. I look out at Mazie and she looks so short standing knee deep in mud. Poor things. And yeah, good things chickens can float. I think. Although I have had a few drown in the water troughs before. So maybe they need floaties, too.

If I complain one time this summer about being hot I want someone to just slap me. I cannot get warm any more. Ever since last winter. It's like bone chilling coldnow. Is this what happens when we get old? I don't like it one little bit. Even my brother who's a year older says he can't seem to get warm. So bring it on, summer. I am ready for ya.

I think I would like to get a concrete truck out here and just concrete all the paths that lead to animals. And put a concret pad at the water trough and the hay bale. Sounds like a good idea. I did get a few tons of crush and run gravel last fall but I cannot see any of it now. It's all under mud.

I am so there with you, Kris. I had to move a trough the other day, and my rubber boots sunk up to an inch below the top, and I got stuck. I just about fell face first trying to get out. My cows appear to have shrunk to half their sizes when they try to get in and out of the barn. We've tried putting down old hay, but they just eat it up, even if I do pack it down. We're almost out of good hay, too, so that'll be a blast, trying to get a truck and trailer in to bring in more. And last night, I got the enjoyment of feeding in the freezing cold rain, with the wind kicking the drops in my face -- it felt like getting belted with buckshot! It's sunshiny today, with tomorrow and Thursday predicting snow and sleet. Mercy! I'll be headed to Tractor Supply today to see if they sell floaties for my cows! I'm thinking of just putting a rowboat in the chicken yard, as my curious little critters'll just flock in it and hopefully float around the farm. Yep. I'm for once ready for the hot dry summers around here. I'll just use well water for the garden!

I just came back in from the feeding frenzy. They are eating SO much. And they all act like they are starving all the time. Like a pack of pigs. It's scary.

Now I am taking all the wasted hay from the goats and putting it on the mud paths. I have to pack it down or the chickens go behind me and scratch it all up. Silly birds. It is supposed to be rainy here and later turn to the white stuff. Mostly on the mountains though. And again on Friday and Sat.

I really am getting some good excercise this winter. Which I need badly. So there is a bright side to all this mess. It makes me work harder.

I hope all the zoo critters get through all this ok.

Sherry, I made castille soap yesterday. I just took it out of the mold and it's hard as a rock already! I'll make a different kind later today. I have errands to run this morning before we get snowed in again.

All our hooved critters at the zoo are locked in grass paddocks for the winter. It's mud up to their ankles and mine. Same thing having to trudge through and sink and slog.

So far no cases of hoof rot (knock wood)

The sun was out Sunday and yesterday but we are due for MORE rain this week. Oh please NO!!

Sherry, I have had my calf in the stall for the past 2 days. It's not raining yet today so decided to put her in the pasture with Mazie this morning. I have been training her to walk with the halter and rope. She's doing great so far. Except when she's been in the stall for 2 days! And I had to take her all the way across the yard to the gate to let her in that way. So here we go across the muddy slippery yard and she takes off running. All I can do is run with her. I made it all the way across without falling! I almost did a few times. But that was fun first thing in the morning being dragged across a muddy slippery yard at break neck speeds.

So that's alot of meat. Ya'll will be eating good soon. And you'll have to share your recipes for the shampoo and body butter. Coco butter is expensive. And shea butter, too. I have a friend who sells it at the Chattanooga market. Maybe she could give me a good deal for bulk.

howdy there, i ended up with 119 pounds of meat.i am happy with that amount. i still have 5 turkeys and 22 chickens to kill. i made cold process shampoo and body bar. i used a lot of shea butter in it. should be very mild. will cut tomorrow. clean and pure. i added nothing except high quality oils at trace. need to do a body butter now. we have been in the raining mode here now. i agree with you girls. i am sick of wet slippery gooey mud and yuk. happy days on the farm sherrye

It has been raining here since yesterday about noon. My big garden is a pond. But actually it was not so bad feeding all the critters this morning. Because I was thinking of this spring when we have nice green grass and lots of green pasture. The trees will be happy and fresh. The wells will not run dry. So there are a lot of things to be greatful for with all this rain. We are also so way out of any drought conditions like we have been here for years.

But still, I have had enough!

Sorry to here you gals are up to yours knees in muck and no relief in sight. We are expecting rain here today and tomorrow. The low spots in my pasture just dried up, but will fill back up today. My goats are staying inside most of the time, except for that short trip (20)to the picnic table they use to sun on. Here's a wish for no rain and lots of sun for all of you.

It is raining here again today. We are suppose to have flooding rain. We have a stack of towels at the back door to clean the dogs feet every time they come in. The horses are so tired of being in. If they go out they stand in the mud and rain and if they stay in they get bored and cranky. I normally like the rain but enough is enough already. We are only suppose to have two nice days in the next 7. Well, dogs want in and I have to clean feet for 3 Great Danes, 1 lab and a border collie. I don't know what is harder cleaning up the horses or the dogs. LOL
