we are thinking of getting chickens, but we like to travel. we do weekend trips as a family at least 4times a year and we make 2 week trips to visit my parents. what do you do with your chickens when you are away. right now the travel is outweighing the benefits of chickens.
thanks!

I always employed a local teenager who's parents were also responsible. There are still great kids out there who take seriously their responsibility when asked to do something. I had neighbor kids sometimes, occasionally kids from church, sometimes 4-H or FFA kids. I always supplied a detailed list of who got what, numbers where I could be reached and when I would return. Also the # of a good vet. I made it clear that they were to call with any little question. Got a frantic call one day, saying someone had come in and stolen every peach in my orchard. I had to laught when I returned home to find deer droppings and spit-out peach pits all over the place. After that, the aussie was left in the orchard when we traveled.

Jennifer, Do you have any neihgbors who could help or know a high school kid that would like some extra money? I'm not sure how rural of an area you live in, but sometimes there are people who do pet sitting or house sitting, some even will take care of livestock too, not just housepets. I think it's hard to travel and have livestock, because of such dilemas. I rely on my folks to help out. I have a pretty large menagerie and there are only about 5 people who can get past our dog Justin. So, I have some other variables, you might not have.
