What a week! Three hatchery catalogs arrived and I am spending way to much time looking at them. Which hatchery catalog is your favorite this year?

It appears all the catalogs have expanded the number of breeds they carry and the photographs of the chickens are really good. I love Meyer Hatchery's catalog cover - a pair of Silver Seabrights. Murray McMurray have really jazzed up their catalog too, as well as Stromberg's. Any other great catalogs I am not receiving?

Thank you Renee, I will be calling Charlotte at Meyers on Monday.

Annika, I love the sandhill preservation website. The owner is also a science teacher! They have beautiful heritage breeds but unfortunately will not ship eggs.

Thank you Farmgirls!

Meg, We had several teachers that would order from Meyer and I never got an unhappy customer while taking orders for the hatching eggs. I checked out their website and read the customer reviews and they were all excellent for the hatchings eggs. My advice would be to call Meyer in case things have changed from when I worked there and ask for Charlotte. She works in the retail store, but has done everything. She's a wealth of info. Thursdays used to be her day off. Best time to call for her is between 9:00 and 3:00. She has email too, but I don't remember her address there, sorry.

Sand Hill Preservation has some beautiful and heirloom breeds, you may want to just browse the web site and check what they have.

Renee, I love the new catalog from Meyer's, you need to pick one up! I do have a question. I am a middle school science teacher and every spring we incubate eggs and raise chicks. The last couple of years our hatch rate has been horrible (3 chicks out of 40 eggs!). Of course being a science teacher, I am trying to limit variables. I bought a new incubator for this year. But the variable I can't seem to control is the possible damage to the air sac in the eggs due to shipping. Here in FL I can find plenty of chicks but no hatching eggs. I have ordered from Iowa (Murray McMurray) and MN (Urch)and the eggs have come FedEx and USPS. So I am thinking about ordering from Meyer in Ohio just to try some other route. Do you have any advice on controlling the shipping factor?

Meg, I used to work at Meyer Hatchery! I assume it's the one in Polk, Ohio? If so, I worked there in the Spring of 2008. I worked the phones and also in the retail store. I haven't gotten a catalog yet for this year yet though. If you have any questions about the operation, I can do my best to answer them.

I have always loved Murray Mcmurray. I have never gotten one from the others, but will look into it now!

God Bless
