Hoof trimming day! My lower back is not looking forward to this at all.

It's been so wet for so long, I'm sure I'm facing some hoof rot in some of the goats. Yuck! Y'all know how goats hate to get wet.....mine are gonna "love" me when I have to spray those feet.

Trimming the girls isn't too bad. They enjoy having the snacks to eat while I work on them. They just kinda' ignore me and munch away.

The boys are a different story. They fight me and act like I'm hurting their pride. Plus, I stink after I'm done with them. Because I do them last, I smell like the girls when I get to them and the boys like it. It's not so funny when a buck snorts and sticks his tongue out at you. I'm always afraid I'm about to get knocked down.

One day I want one of those $1500 goat rotating chutes.

How about y'all? How do you tackle trimming?

Well I only got Esther and almost Sadie done yesterday. Will get to Joey and finish Sadie up tomorrow.

I never enjoyed trimming my goats feet (or the sheep either) until I got my cow. Now THAT is a job!
The buck goat I had for years "Trapper" was very sweet and gentle. He was always easier to trim than the girls..but then I got alot smellier trimming him up. My smallish angora doe is the hardest to trim now (besides Mona of course) just cuz she is feisty. She is nearly 8 years old!

Zan, your comment about all the boy species had me cracking up. My hubby asked what was so funny, "Oh, just a little farmgirl humor, honey" was my reply.

Channah, both my bucks are pretty gentle and loving, too. They love giving and getting little kisses, they "talk" to me, and jump up on the stand for me BUT when I start clipping they both put up a fuss as if to try to prove that they're still "the man".

I hate to admit it....I got a little side tracked and didn't get any trimming done. I put it on today's "to do" list and got side tracked by a couple of fruit tree sales this morning. Now I gotta plant trees. Hmmmm.....perhaps I'm putting it off.

No more bucks here, Channah. I sold my last 3 and the 2 I'm keeping went to their new home back in December til I need them next fall! I just don't want to keep bucks here. I am sure we will have some buck kids in March, though. With my luck we'll have quite a few. I am counting on lots of girls, though.

It's been wet and very muddy here, too. All my does are dried up right now. They need a trim, I'm sure. I need new trimmers. The spring has come off and I have to make myself trim them. I have started feeding them grain in the evening again so in the next few days I will start trimming. I just put them in their stanchions and feed them real good and go for it. I have never had any trouble with mine as long as they're eating. I have gone a little too far and cut off too much. Hate when I do that.

Have fun. How many do you have to do? And what kind are they?

One of my does isn't too bad, she leans on me while I have her hooves in my hand, the other tries to tuck her hooves beneath her, gets up and down, it is hard to do hers, she even ignores the food in the feeder. My new boy Big Al is dirty, matted and stinks, he needs a bath, then a hair cut, I can't even see his hooves. Hubby is off tomorrow and will help me get Big Al up on the milk stand, and hopefully he is food-oriented enough to not be too much trouble.

Oh Catherine I know what you mean. Today is hoof trimming day for me too. Thank you for the reminder!!! My goats are really good about it as longs as they are eating grain while I do it. lol Even my buck is really good about it. And thank goodness he does not smell anymore. :) But before when he really smelled really bad and I'd have to go trim his hooves I'd come in smelling like him, and no body in my family would even come near me. But he is such a sweet and gentle goat that I don't have to worry about him doing anything to me. He's just like a baby! Always following me around, wanting to be petted, etc. :) I sure love my goats!! Well I wish you good luck with your trimming today!! If I could i'd comeover and do it for you!!

Channah
