What a way to wake up on Christmas morning. My dd woke me up at 3:15 in the morning, to tell me she was getting wet - the roof was leaking above her bed. We had a tremendous storm, complete with lightning and thunder that would last for 90 second stretches. I got up, sent her to her brother's room to finish out her sleep, got the pots and pans, and by that time, I was wide awake. From around 3:45 until daylight broke, I watched the darkened sky split with multiple lightning strikes, listened to hail hitting the roof and windows, and just generally admired the commotion from a safe and dry utility room. Once it was light enough, I noticed one of my cows licking some pile in a puddle. Ladies, it took me less than 30 seconds to put on rubber boots, jacket and hat. I flew out and lo and behold, she had a baby heifer. Another minute or two passed before I flew back in the house, woke up dh and ds and hauled them out of bed to get mama and baby in the barn. Her name is Miss Ruthie, and mama and baby are doing great! And then, early, early on New Year's day, we had another heifer. Her name is Hope. I just love it when the babies start arriving! They are just so darn cute! Both look like their daddy, Elvis -- precious white faced Herefords, even if their mama's are either Angus or part Holstein. Yippee! Now, just five more to go!

Life isn't about waiting for the storms to pass...it's about learning to dance in the rain!

Awww.... the calves sound so precious! That must be so much fun for you and your family to have baby calves born on your farm! I love it when baby animals are born!

Have fun with your new critters!

How wonderful! Our cows are a little "off" on their timing...we start getting calves in the summer. Usually while we're on vacation! Have fun with your new "babies"!

Wow. That's great. I don't know how those cows have calves on the coldest nights of the winter. But they do and most of the time they're fine. Congratulations!

Kris
