Well I have an interesting and sad problem to say the least. One of our homegrown show rabbits (Rocker) has a split penis. I have read that it is a genetic problem and he can not be shown since it is a disqualification. Well his sire does not have that problem but I am afraid Rocker will pass it on to his youngsters. So I bought 2 show bucks from a friends friend hoping to breed and show them. Well yesterday I was grooming them and turned one of them over and he also has a split penis. I wouldn't have seen it if he wasn't excited by one of the does but it is definately split. I called the lady I bought him from and she refused to refund/replace anything. Now I have 2 bucks taking up space that I can not show and am afraid to breed. Since cage space is limited I am thinking of selling them as pets and taking the loss but my husband thinks we should test breed them to see if they can reproduce and if they pass it on.

I don't know what to do.

Great news!!! The lady finally got in touch with me and decided to send me half my money back since I can not show him. I am offering him to a friend of mine as a pet.

Oh I forgot to mention, my in-laws live in Sulphur, OK and would prob come out and do the job for you if you can't bring yourself to do it.

I don't suffer from stress. I'm a carrier.

We used to raise rabbits to eat, and personally, I would cut my losses and put him on a platter. Sounds like that gal won't make good on a bad buck, and they are pretty tastey. The defects are pretty reliably passed on, we had a few, and I agree with the others you must weed out that characteristic.

No these are Jersey Woolies. The lady I bought him from told my friend but never called me that she was going on vacation but when she gets back she will check her buck she has left from the litter and if it has a split penis she will refund me half my money so I can sell mine as a pet and make the rest of my money back. If hers does not have a split penis she will trade me even steven. We will have to see if she calls me and tells me the same thing. I am not to thrilled having any of that line at all even if I was hoping for chocolates to breed to my broken chocolate doe. The split penis bucks are out of the breeding line and slated for pets either to be sold ASAP or at the March rabbit show in Duncan. The will be some fancy pets I must say but honestly I could use the cage space sine we just had 5 babies a couple weeks ago and another litter due this week. Maybe I will have some awesome homegrown bucks somewhere in there.

I would definetely end the breeding line. Never breed him, if he doesnt have the split penis, he will be a carrier. Chocolate?, are these mini rex by chance. I have bad luck with chocolate mini rex and split penis, even from unrelated lines, maybe it just a coincidence,

Well I think pets would be the best bet too! The Chocolate buck I bought isn't related to anything else I have so that is great. The other buck Rocker was one of our babies so I am concerned about that. His sire is fine but older so I am going to pull him out of the breeding program as well. So hopefully that is all of the lineage except one doe out of the same sire as Rocker and she hasn't been bred yet. Thanks so much I really just needed to vent. I paid for show quality and got ripped off but now I know to check the bucks very very well. Poor guys.

I would turn them into pets (neutered, of course). I had a house bunny for a number of years and they make very good companions. Maybe you could contact the House Rabbit Society and see if there are any foster homes available for them.

The only problem with doing a test breeding is if he does pass it on, then theres a good chance you could end up with several more "pets". The lady whom you bought the bucks from probally knew those bucks were deformed and hoped you would not notice, I would be real tempted to turn in your knowledge of her to ARBA, also I would be weeding out the line that produced these bucks, and ensuring that line ends with you. It amazes me how many unethical animal breeders there are out there, good luck.
