And here's the best part...I'm giving them away for Christmas to a family in poverty. How farmgirl is that?
A friend of mine gave me a catalogue for a company called Heifer International (www.heifer.org) that takes donations (you buy a certain type of animal for a dollar amount, and someone in need gets the animal and promises to give an offspring to a neighbor...so the gift keeps on giving)and turns them into sustainable food/ livelihood /income for people in poverty.
So, guess what all the adults on my Christmas list are getting this year? A note that they don't have to return, dust, eat, or wear anything from me this year. I'm going to buy bees and trees and ducks and rabbits to feed the hungry in their honor. :) Best Christmas shopping spree I've ever done!

Super cool. Thanks for the BWB idea. I've heard some negative press about Heifer Int. but you know, I felt really good about the gift of bees. And some folks just gripe about anything and anyone. Best part of giving bees is that they don't require special feed, they pollinate instead of consuming whatever growth is around, and it is less likely the bees will be slaughtered or stolen to fill bellies that night. They are better for sustainability of the family and environment.
Lol...I did think that quite a few people might want to "volunteer" their critters. 'specially when they're naughty....
I'm always looking for other organizations with a good reputation and humanitarian focus.

I love Heifer International as well. Good for you :) Have you heard of Bees Without Borders? It's a non-profit where they teach people in developing countries to keep bees and how to market it's products...makes my beekeepin' heart sing :)

I sent a hive a bees and a share in one goat and one sheep. Way too cool, helping out someone in need with a gift that allows them to help themselves.

That is such a great thing to do. I only wish we could ship the critters over ourselves! Really, though. That's a good thing you have done.

Awesome, Michelle!! I just love that organization and all they do! My kids helped buy a cow and sheep and some goats, I think, with their Children's church group. That is such a fantastic gift and the kids felt like they had done something truly grand!

Very cool! One year where I teach the kids in my class did a school wide fundraiser to buy livestock through that same place. The real fun was when we added up the money, then did a vote to decide which animals to buy. What a combination of critters!!
