Girls, I need some help. I am trying to fence our three acres for the horses. Im doing okay with the post holes, its just hard work but I can do that. Now when I am stretching the smooth wire I cannot get it tight enough. I dont want to pay $99 for the ratchet thing they sell to make it tight but I want a nice tidy fence. Can anyone help?
Also, has anyone built a jack-rail fence before? Any cheap but good horsekeeping ideas?

Sarah, we just use a come-along and chain. We made a thing to hold the chain with 2 pieces of 2x4 and screws and somehow put that on the fence ( we use field fence) and put the come-along at the end. Anyway, it sounds strange but it works. And come-alongs are just about $25 at Lowes.

Sarah, I am sorry, but I know of no way to successfuly stretch fence, without a fence stretcher, storebought or homemade.
I know of a book called "Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage", facilities design and management, by Cherry Hill, this book has alot of very good ideas

Hi Alee, we are absolutely not using t-posts! I too have seen these injuries in the past, and though I do have several hundred of the yellow caps up in the barn from sprucing up "make do" fences in the past, I am not using them here at home. But thank you so much for bringing this up! I dont think people realize how horribly dangerous they can be.

Sarah- can I be a concerned horse person and ask hopefully that you are capping those t-posts if you are using t-posts? I have seen some really gruesome injuries on horses from uncapped t-posts!
