that since we are mainly hands-on type animal people, since we probably don't have degrees from a university/college in horsemanship or farming or whatever, we are ignorant and not intelligent?? I thought you gals might get a laugh over a post on a snooty horse board that I frequent. It was assumed that we don't read peer reviewed literature (actually, I do read as much as I can) we types don't have the smarts to own horses or do anything. Someone told them they were an elitist snob!!
So sad, that we mere regular people can't handle the truth, huh??

Oh and BTW, some of us "animal people" HAVE our college degrees. And I'd rather be a glorified poop-picker-upper at a zoo than some shuffling hall walking, deadline dealing , paper pushing, boring as heck desk job!
And really, anyone who has domestic animals to raise, no matter what they are MUST have a bit of smarts to deal w/ the occasional problems that crop up. One of the greatest teachers I know is a self taught naturalist and can tell you stuff you'll NEVER hear OR see in a college setting.
The person who wrote the article sadly fits that stereotype of the snobbish horse know-it-all

This is why I stick with plain 'ole trail riding.
There are folks like these in every group.
I'm more a dog person and it's kind of funny and embarasing for the person when they get all uppity and start talking like they are the best expert .....for your animal and theirs! |

Well I use to ride and show quarter horses with my dad when I was growing up. I currently do not have horses but I recall there were 2 kinds of horse people the very rich people that threw there kids on a beautiful animal that someone else trained and the kid had no clue what to do. The other kids were like me ride 5 days a week shoveled my horses stall loved my horse. My dad always called them drug store cowboys. That was over 20 years ago from a kids veiwpoint. Im a little off subject but what an idiot. Let the smart girls go get him!!!!!

I have to agree with EVERYTHING Kristin said. When you raise livestock for any length of time, sooner or later you've seen, and DEALT WITH, just about everything. I too give my own shots, wormer, shearing, hoof trimming, doctoring (though I haven't done stitches yet, but probably could!). I even treated a severe case of laminitis (one of the most EXPENSIVE horse ailments there is!) all by myself! It took 4 months of twice daily doctoring to see ANY improvement, and a year for full recovery, but you would never know that my sweet old gelding had been so dibilitated and sick. My vet was shocked that I did it, but also not surprised. He thinks I'm a hoot! I've had horses for nearly 20yrs, and I started out knowing as much about them (along with the chickens, sheep, goats, etc....) as I did knowing how to FLY like a bird! You learn as you go, mostly out of necessity, desperation, and LACK OF FUNDS!
The "Know-it-alls" are the ones who HAVE the money to let everyone ELSE take care of their critter problems. Yet, it seems they always take the credit THEMSELVES.  Hmm... I would SO LOVE to see one of those "UPPITY SNOOTS" with their arm crammed up an animals hoo-hoo fishing around for the right parts of a baby to PULL OUT!!    Wouldn't that be something? Welcome to MY world! (and Kristins, and so many OTHER ladies I can name!) (LOL!!! I crack myself up! )

I would ADORE a link to that board. I have disected a full horse, attending a riding school in the UK and and scrubbed in on several colic surgeries and my degree has NOTHING to do with animals. Please send a link...Im feeling a can of whoopass getting ready to open.

I should have a vet degree with all the things I have to do around here. I have given so many shots and treated so many wounds. I would have spent a fortune if I had to take all these guys to a vet or have one out here. So we have to learn how to treat them all ourselves. And I know a lot of people who can tell me what to do. Most of them are women, too. I don't know. I have plenty of books. I feel like I am at a hand's on learning facility here. Every day is something new to learn about. Hmmm, I suppose some might call this ignorance, I don't know. But I could probably help anyone who called about a sick animal. And like myself, I will not go to a doctor until I know what ever I have been doing myself isn't working. I will do the same with my critters. Do all I can here and if it's not helping then I'll call a vet.
