I've been trying to weed the flower gardens, cut down the lireope, and rake the leaves, but I have to always look over my shoulders. There is an alligator that comes much to close to the end of the lake. He/she just sits on a fallen tree and watches me. I call the Wildlife people, to no avail. So, I keep a rifle with me as I do my work in the yard. Maybe I should give the alligator a name; any ideas? Here's a picture.

An electric fence would be nice, but I'd have to electric fence the whole area. There is the lake in the back of the house, the Vermilion River in front of the house, and on both sides there is canals of water. We are surrounded by water, which also means the alligators can come in from every or any direction. LOL Good idea, but could be super expensive. I'll just keep the rifle handy!

Yikes, eww, bleh! He gives me the creeps just looking at him! I like boots for his name, or purse, or even bags, as in he'll make some nice ones, lol!!!
When my mom and dad were living on Skidaway Island in GA, I would take my kids for visits. We would always walk or ride bikes along the paths, next to the ponds. There were lots of bridges over them. Yes, there were alligators all over the banks. The day my 12 year old daughter got mad, because we got too close to one on our bikes, was the day we quit doing that!
Mom and dad have since moved inland, so we don't have to worry about those anymore.

Marly how about and electric fence on that you can turn of when you are out side and need the protection and turn off when are finished. I would think over time they would get smat enough that they wouldn't come up on shore to your house.

Didn't know that but it's good to know that if they are a danger to a person, then, at least, you can plink them. Still, just to get to that situation, too scary for me!

Boy Marly- sounds scary to me. Good luck and shoot first ask questions later. Maybe a fence might be an option but I would hate to hav e to put one up just to feel safe in my own yard. |

Alligators are protected in Louisiana. There is a hunting season, but the hunters can only kill just a few and those few have to be tagged. The alligators that are in the lake behind our house came in from the floods of two hurricanes. Even the Wildlife people will not come and take them out. They have told me that if they are a danger to any person we can shoot them. So, I do what I have to do. There were up to 8 in the lake at one time, now they may have four or five.

I like Crocodile Dundee!!
After seeing an alligator or croc up close and personal, in a canal, in the middle of FL last year and how FAST those suckers can move...I think I'd plink him now and save yourself the worry!! We stopped on the side of the highway, by the canal, then noticed there was a croc/alli sitting there and one in the water. All that was between us was a chain link fence. We were already out of our big rig before we noticed. I mean, those suckers blend right in with the foliage and even in the water, they were kind of tough to see!! In a split second, both were gone and popped up 15 ft. away, just eyeballing us. We inched back to the truck and got in. We didn't know how strong that chain link fence was and if it would stop a full fledged charge. So, have some good pics and learned a lesson!!
Oh, also, this was close to where we saw a sign that warned of jaguar crossings....

Marly, Please be very careful! I would not like having that thing that close to my house! I personally think I would take it out while I could! I don't go after animals, but if we get a rattlesnake in the yard it's absolutely dead!

Oh my. And I worry about coyotes,snakes, elk and the occasional bear in our neck of the woods. Although I did have to go on a fire call one day and help the police get a Caymen (sp?).... a little alligator out of a drainage ditch. That was close enough for me to that kind of wildlife.

Marly, is there a way you can put up some kind of barrier that the gators can't cross, i.e.,tack boards, pot shards, things like that. I love all wild life, and if they are not a nusanise, I leave them alone, but, if they become trouble, I have no problem removing them.

ok so Im not so jealous of your warmer climate now... Iowa is just fine cold is ok. I had a snake in my house last summer and I about came unglued. It was the size of a large earthworm. I was just sure it was in the giant anaconda family thou (not really). My DH just laughed at me. I Got him back thou this fall we had a 7ft. bull snake on our screen door just making his way to the bird nest outside the front door, talk about scream. I opened up the door to go outside and was face to face with it. Thank goodness it was on the other side of the screen door. |

Amanda: I'm more afraid for my 5 outside cats than I am for myself. They love to go on the side of the lake, and the Wildlife fellow that did come over to see the alligators told me their favorite foods is cats and dogs. Hello!
Kris: The alligator does have five other friends. It did once have a lot of other friends. One of those friends was looking at my husband in his outside shop. Needless to say that gator is gone for good.
Teresa: It is a small alligator, but small or large I don't want them near me, they move really fast. I like the name Gertrude.
Kal and Kathy: Boots, Purse.... meaning or as in an alligator pair of boot, or an alligator purse! Feel free to come down to Louisiana, if you can catch the alligator, I'll help you skin it. LOL

Looks like a little girl to me, lol. Is it an illision, or is she/he a young/ small gator, 4ft or so, from tip of snout, to tip of tail?
Anyways, I think her name should be Gertrude.

Uh uh. I could not handle that so close to my yard! It's not even full grown yet. Keep that gun close. How about Boots. It really looks quite content there on that log, though. I wonder if it has a friend. Be careful. Be very careful!
