Share with us how you may have rescued a cat or dog, or any other kind of animals. I love to hear those stories.
My Zoe cat was rescued from a shelter. The shelter was going to put Zoe and her sister to sleep. I was going to take Zoe's sister, too. As I was leaving, these two beautful older ladies with really big sun hats came into the shelter wanting a kitten. I said really fast, "Here take this one, she's paid for, and I'll pay for her spaying." The ladies were saying, "Sister look how beautiful she is." I knew that that little kitten would have a beautiful home and much love.
I can't wait to hear other stories of rescue.
I'll post later about how Luck-Dog, Nadia, etc... were rescued.

Susan!
Now that is a story for a short story book on cats. I loved, loved, loved it. Thanks for sharing. GF and Curry are super lucky loved ones. Is there a picture of Curry for us to see. Oh, I love these stories. Thanks for helping keep this thread alive. We should all keep it going for all of our rescued cats, dogs, etc... Curry is one lucky cat.

Thanks for sharing your stories! Kannieann, I have tears in my eyes again. I hope this thread keeps going!

Now I'd like to add another post titled "The Cat That Brought Us a Beautiful Girl".

My son called one Sunday afternoon asking is I knew an emergency vet. His girlfriend's cat was very sick, barely breathing.
We have a good vet with an emergency number which I passed on. DS called back later that they had taken the cat in and it had severe asthma. The vet had given the cat, Curry, medicene and he was starting to improve. A month later Curry was back to normal. Though GF tried to keep him in, her parent often let him out of the house. One day he didn't return. GF searched and, after a couple of days, DS went with her house to house in her neighborhood with no luck. When a week had gone by they checked with the county humane society and found that stray animals in the city limits were sent to a different facility. That boarding kennel only answers their phone for one hour each day. The next day both DS and GF were working at that time so I called for them. Yes, the lady thought she had seen him, but after a week they pass them on to someone else who puts them up for adoption. She said she'd call and check. She called back in an hour. "Sorry, but he's been adopted and we have a policy of not letting people know where they have gone, or no one would adopt!" I asked if GF could at least stop out with a picture for ID so she would at least know if that was her cat or not. Later I got a brainstorm, maybe the "pre-existing condition" of Asthma might change things! Maybe the new owner wouldn't want a pet with problems! Jume called the next morning and was told Curry hadn't really been adopted. It seems that when they have a surplus of neutered cats they take them to a farmer who agrees to feed them and give them shelter. Curry was a house cat, might not survive too long in a barn. So she and DS went to the farm, but couldn't find him. That was the one year anniversary of GF and DS dating, but not a happy day.
The next day GF got a call from the city animal control officer. She had taken some other cats to the farm and found Curry!
GF made sure she had a litter box, food and everything in her room so Curry wouldn't get into the rest of the house and get out again. Her dad let him out anyway. This time he was snagged by animal control the first day. The fee to get him back was $120 dollars. On top of that June was informed that city policy is "three strikes and you're out", to euthanize any animal caught for a third time. Her dad said a cat that wants to go out should go out.
The next evening DS asked us if GF could stay with us for a while. She had told her dad he should pay her back for the cost of getting the cat back and he handed her a check and told her to move out! Over a cat! I was concerned that I didn't want to expand the rift with her parents but she needed a place to stay. I talked to her in person and told her she was always welcome here. She quietly asked is Curry could stay here too. I don't know everything that was said. She is a wonderful young woman, not really a girl, at 22 years old. Though she was born in the US her parents were refugees and cling to old traditions. They had already planned a marriage for her and she didn't go through with it. So now GF and Curry live with us and we love them both.

Karrieann!!!!
I have a smile bigger than the moon after reading your post. You surely asked the right person to send you a Beagle! Quiggly was meant to be yours! And Abigal adopting you, not you adopting her, how sweet. I love the stories I am reading here. There is so much love for these rescued dogs and cats. I loved your story.

Oh my gosh! This thread! I am a sucker for these types!
Do I dare to begin the story?

I have been blessed twice by the "rescued" ones.
Prayers been answered times over times!

Years ago, I had two dogs that were getting very old.
Sandy, Sheltie mix, aged 14 and Levi, Golden & Brittany mix, aged 12

One day, Sandy had gotten a stroke and was very disoriented, vet said time was getting near. A voice came over me and warned me ahead that I'll be losing them both close together. I was taken back and sadden. The voice calmed me and reassured me that it was just to prepare me for the event. Time came, I had Sandy put down, there was no point to prolong her and three months later, it was time to say good bye to Levi as he was too, ready to go. My heart broke for I miss them both.

A while later the voice spoked to me again, with a request. God actually asked me a question! I was floored! Me? God was asking me? He asked, for my next dog what would I like to have? Huh? He is asking me what I want? WOW! I took this seriously and thought over the answer for few days. I researched breeds, want ads for pups. Somehow the choice was beagle! I do not know why because I never had one nor seen one...not counting Snoopy from the Peanut's Gang! I said Beagle! He said, ok, now wait and I have one for you, but must wait. I thought I was okay about this whole waiting thing... but I didn't figure in on this pain of ache of missing my furkids! The hole was so great, I need to look for that beagle... I need to help God along... right? I went to several pet adoption places and registered to be considered for adopting a dog. Couldn't find any beagle, no where! Well, hey.. look at this cute lil Jack Russell who needs a home! He is kindaaaaa a beagley.. in colors anyway. After being interviewed I was rejected! I felt so rejected! the voice spoke ... wait ....wait patiently. I sighed and nodded, I shall wait. About few weeks went by, I made at a stop at a pet store for my daughter who needed some supplies for her fish. As I waited for her, I read this periodical for dogs and cats who were in need of homes. I flipped the pages by pages.. large ad caught my eye. The Seattle Beagle Rescue! The whaaaat? Oh my gosh! The BEAGLE RESCUE! But Seattle is such a long way around the sound for me to get to! We arrived home and I went to the internet and searched the rescue, there was no "google" then. I called the Seattle people and told them that I was searching to adopt a beagle. They mention that there was a lady over in Bremerton area that is fostering a beagle. I heard Bremerton! That is the next town north of me!!! I called the foster mother, Sharon. She and I met and talked. I met Quiggly, the beagle. She was perfect! She was all over my daughters and myself, throwing herself all over us! My heart began to panic, I remembered one thing the Seattle Beagle Rescue (SBR)group had said, that it would be one hundred dollars for adoption fee. I just could not spend that.. hadn't discussed this to hubby(former hubby). Sharon had asked how were we to go about this as she just had Quiggly listed with SBR just the day before I called. I mentioned that SBR wanted $100. Sharon was flabber gasped and said why? I told her, it was for the shots and neutering. Oh no, that just will not be, said Sharon. I had all of that done from my own pocket. Quiggly is yours, your home is just right for her and we are right for her. Well, she was two when I she adopted my family. I had her for 12 years. Quiggly went to the Rainbow Bridge on 09 Nov 2006. I thanked God for her!
On 09 Nov 2006, I was at my computer and hubby at his, he kept sending me examples of beagles that were looking for a fur-ever home from Petfinder.com. My heart was not going to get any hopes up for any of those cute faces. We filled out several application of desiring to be adopting another rescued beagle. One face popped up and stole my heart. I said no to myself, don't get any hopes up yet. We sent an e-mail to Abigail's Foster mother June and told her our story. This was Thursday night. Saturday morning I peeked into my e-mails which was rare for me at that time, because I usually didn't till in the evenings. There was this e-mail from June, asking us to meet her at a Petsmart in Roswell GA. My heart skipped a beat. Hubby said, lets go. Off we went. We got lost on the way and finally found the store. It was few hours of driving. I saw Abigail! My heart pounding, I reminded myself.. nooo not yet. June met us and said, would you like to take her for a walk? Would I? Yessssss! As we arrived back from a brief walk around with Abigail, I over heard two college girls saying that they came to see Abigail. My heart guarded. June asked them a few questions and then said sorry but Abigail has already been adopted. My husband and I looked at each other... like huh? A family with two doxies and three children, one very young were also asking about Abigail. June repeated what I heard before... Abigail has been adopted. We asked June, are we Abigail's family? Yes. Needless to say, Abigail adopted us and we just celebrated our third year anniversary with her!

A rescued animal, whether it be a dog, cat, or horse, or any other pet/animal, will give back 10 fold, they are so un-conditionaly grateful for that second chance at life, just look into their eyes, and you will see all the way down to your own soul.

Our 3rd dogie addiction is a rescue, his name WAS Michi(if he ever even knew it!)(it is now Wiley) they found him and 66 other dogs in a small single wide trailer, basically this was a breeding facility and he was kept in a cage his whole 5 yrs except for when they threw him at female dogs in heat...other than that they kept all the dogs in cages because they couldn't get a handle on all the breeding. It was black Friday of last year and hubby and i decided to stop into the animal shelter and the place was over crowded with dogs because of the recent hoarding/breeding rescue. there was our little Wiley (formerly michi) shivering in a corner scared half to death. we brought him home and he was skin and bones, in pain from just being neutered and deathly afraid. almost a year later he is an absolute love and my other boys(dogs) sammy and baily accept him like he has been here all along. I recently made him a sweater and found that it was too small because he gained a size from becoming healthy with our love, care and food. his love for us is different than our other 2 boys..our other boys we've had since they were babies and at times can take hubby and i for granted merely because they have always been spoiled rotten..but wiley is different, you can see his utter appreciation for everything we do for him, i just hope he realizes everything he does for us...watching him grow into this great dog and we couldn't have picked a better guy, he fits like a glove here. I think I'm hooked on rescuing and when it's time for us to add to the family again that is the way we will go. the satisfaction of it all is indescribable

I loved, loved, loved your story. Thank Heavens for pet rescue lovers like you and your husband. Like Susan said about her dog Tasha being a peacemaker, they all bring such peace and love to us. My outside cats love me, I know that without a doubt. Almost every morning they leave me a treat at the back door; someitmes it's a mole, or a mouse, or part of a rabbit. Thanks for sharing your story.
And: Susan, I'll read all the pet stories you want to post. I could never have enough of hearing or reading about other peoples pets.

We had an outside cat that one of the neighbors had abandoned for over 10 years. When he died my husband was heartbroken so I said, let's go to the pound and rescue a cat! (never liked dogs) so off we go to the pound and all the cats they have are twice the size of our cats and none are declawed (ours are only on the front because they live in the house with us)so he wanted to look at the dogs..i say only outside dogs! don't want one in the house...we look and look and look and in the farthest back corner is the most pitiful looking little black dog with the saddest eyes and that is the one he wants. so we pay the money and she goes off to be "fixed" and the next day we get a phone call saying that she has kennel cough and we dont' have to take her (well, i couldn't say no at this point) so I called the vet and he assured me that it couldn't be passed to the cats and she was going to be outside, right? you all know where this is going...we take her to the vet for the rest of the shots and he goes...oh, you know this is a lap dog and lives inside, right? sigh....that night though she is very sick and my dh who wanted her so badly never gets out of bed to care for her...so i carry my pillow and a cover to the sofa up front and stay up with her all night and end up falling in love! she is so loving and sweet and so spoiled by now almost 4 years later. she has had a lot of problems over the years with her back (she also got distemper from the pound and we got her out before they put down over 80 dogs for for it) and that messed her back up but I would not trade her for the world and the last time she had to go to the "hospital" I told my dh that i would sell anything we had to pay for the treatment (including his motorcycle). Anyway, to make a long story even longer...my sister who lives in Oklahoma "rescued" a long hair rat terrier and her husband made her give it away because it was too little to stay outside where they live and he was getting into a lot of trouble and we ended up with Baby Boy and he is so sweet to us but even sweeter to our Sally...she loves him very much and takes care of him like he was her baby...too cute. would do it all over again...love the furbabies-cats AND dogs....

Over the years we have had many rescued pets. I couldn't limit myself to one posting! I wanted to share about our rescued trio.
My SIL was working as a respite foster care giver. She loves kids and animals and worked with high-needs children giving the parents a break. She was assigned a family with 3 boys, all with ADHD and behavior issues. She stopped by their home one day and to her horror saw the boys playing catch with new puppies! As she came through the door, a pup hit the wall and was killed. She scooped up the 3 live pups and stopped by a pet store to get dog milk replacer.
She called us because she couldn't keep them. We took all three, thinking we could find homes for 2 and keep just one. Fat chance of that with 3 kids of our own. By the time they were weaned each had been claimed by a different family member and they were ours for life. The were an amazing mix( a friend suggested that the 3 looked like they had a combination of 5 fathers!). Mikey was named for a kid in a cereal ad "Have Mikey try it, he'll eat anything!" He had the black and tan markings of a Doberman, smooth hair, medium length legs and the body and head shape of a large Chihuahua. He also had a misformed front foot and a jutting lower jaw. We don't know if that was genetic or the result of early injury. He would curl up and DH could hold him in one hand, the "dogball". Larry had a coat that appeared to be a combination of poodle and Yorkie, and short legs.He was black as a pup but gradually turned silver. He was named after one of the Three Stooges. Russel was named by one of SIL's foster kids after her favorite musician. He had long legs, a silky thin coar and the look of a delicate cocker spaniel. Russel and Mikey are gone but Larry is still going strong. He only likes family, and it seems everyone else who comes finds it a challenge to try to make friends with him. DD's ex boyfriend worked at it for 2 years! DS's girlfriend could pet him the first day. He seems to be a good judge of character!

We have had quite a few rescued animals over the years. One that stands out in my mind is Tasha. She was a collie/German Shepherd mix.
We got her from a shelter in a neighboring town. She was one of the "Easter Puppies". When a family returned from church on Easter morning they found a basket of 5 pups on their front porch. They couldn't keep them all so 4 went to the shelter.
Tasha was beautiful in her own way. She was a good sized dog with the color, markings and face shape of a collie and the body and hair type of a German Shepherd. She found her calling as a peacekeeper, constantly stopping any fight among the roosters, dashing between them and totally distracting them from violence. She didn't allow any rough play between our kids, gently getting between them. Whenever our son picked up a stick as a pretend gun she would grab the other end and pull till she got it away. She was a great loving dog.

That's a wonderful story, Sherry. I love animal stories too, but sometimes they are so sad. Have you read any books by Jon Katz? I think one is The Dogs of Bedlam Farm, one is Good Dog and another is Dog Days. I've read the last two. He had always had a nice calm life as a writer and he had always had golden retrievers, I think or yellow labs. Some nice calm, docile dog. He took in a rescue dog....a border collie....and his life changed forever. He eventually took in more of the dogs and then bought a sheep farm for the dogs. Because, of course, border collies needed sheep.

Hi Sherry:
Your story of Skimo and Sloopy was so heartwarming. Thanks for sharing it with us. I never find a story about a dog or cat or any animal too long in telling it. I could read day in and day out about our pets. Give hugs to Skimo and Sloopy. And- I hope you have a wonderful and happy day today.

we awoke to the smell of skunk all aroung the house. no not again, are we ever going to have control of the skunk issue? 3 years and counting the house would fill up in the night with the aroma. i had spent many a night and day fighting the skunk battle. spring they come to try and go under to have babies. winter they try to go under to be warm. when papa went to close the irrigation pipe you know what he got skunked. we finally put wire down along the house and poured concrete in and on it to keep them out.one of my egg customers said why not a dog? papa is afraid of dogs i said. ron works at the shelter and said i can find you a dog. so the journey began that brought skimo and our family together.the wonder dog. skimo is part kelpie cattle dog. since my disabilities cause me to have days on the couch i needed a dog that did not need me to be happy. no inside critters except yorkie.skimo lived on a animal horders place. 2 years ago the place was raided. over 150 animals were taken. skimo went to live with the president of the shelter on her farm.he slept in the snow and ice on a sheet of cold at her place. he went thru mant surgeries for his eyes and face. he had been eaten alive by bigger dogs. she saved him and he lived with her animals for a year. never would he enter any buildings or runs or shelters. it broke her heart that in winter he would be out there shivering alone. so through ron andthe shelter he came to us.we are fenced all around. no one could touch him. he was here, scared, alone. now what do i do. wow since it was spring i was out a lot. babies every where. he would follow and never bother the livestock. wary but calm. one day skimo was gone. oh how we felt cannot be described. this boy had been through enough. now somehow he was out running. we brought dogs that knew skimo and tracked him for hours. where are you buddy? to no avail. weeks later i am out feeding pigs. i feel a strange sence i am not alone. turning around there is skimo sitting watching waiting for me. omg since then he has not left or caused a single hurt to anyone or anything. he is fat sassy happy. i realized he needed a friend to sleep with. here comes sloopy. when the shelter deliverd her much excitement eas in the air. they told me that sloopy and skimo were best friends at the horders house. skimo would fight the dogs off of her. that is how he was so wounded. when we unloaded sloopy skimo went nuts. they played and ran and rejoiced in life. now i can pet and love skimo all i want. sloopy needs more time. she will come to me and touch me if i do not move. she will eat goodies if i throw them to her. no more skunks at all on a poultry farm.yahoo. i must say when i drive in from being gone skimo actually makes crying sounds he is so glad to see me home. that is nioce since i am pretty much alone on the farm.he does not do this with any other cars. what a fine life we have indeed. farmgirl life is the best for me. well skimo and i have to milk. this was fun to write. i hope its not to long for you girls. i love my dogs so much. thanks for reading sherrye learn as you go farm silk purse

No, Bandit was a loveable outside stray that I started feeding, and he was hit by the blades of a wheat harvester I'm pretty sure...It was an expensive and long process healing him up...he gets along on three legs just fine...I love the little devil!

Did Bandit have only 3 legs when you rescued him? I've seen a 3 legged horse, and it got around really good. I was just amazed. As the saying goes, where there is a will, there's a way!
I live off of a country highway, so I know about animal drop offs. In fact, that's how I got most of the dogs I've had. I just cannot imagine doing such a thing.

Darby, Stella, and Gimli are all used dogs. Rescued from the neighbors gun (he was chasing their chickens) rescued from the walmart parking lot, and rescued from the humane society respectively. 4 cats too..and a gecko. All rescues. One of the cats was found alone in the barn, a new kitten with his eyes still closed. We bottle fed him. He is my special favorite but dont tell anyone else...

We adopted my buddy Jackson (a shepard/retriever mix) from an animal shelter when he was 6 months old. He lived to be 13 years old before passing away from cancer. About 6 months later I started walking dogs at the local animal shelter, where I met...

Zena! A 9 year old lab/pitbull mix. She had been picked up when the local fair left town, at about 3 years old. She was pregnant. She had the pups at the shelter, and they were all adopted out, including Zena. Then, her people got divorced, and brought her back to the shelter. At that point, she was a 90 pound, 7 year old, pit-bull mix. She was at the shelter for two years.

After I had walked her a few times, I came home and told my boyfriend about this dog at the shelter who was not that pretty, but had the sweetest personality. She turned out to be the doggie love of my life!! She was great with kids, great with other dogs, and just loved everyone. A big mush who appreciated being rescued!

We had to have her put to sleep last March due to severe arthritis-she couldn't get up, walk on her own, or even stay upright anymore. For a while I thought I would never get another dog, but now I'm thinking maybe next spring.

And it will DEFINITELY be a shelter dog!!

If you like, you can go to my blog, and go to the "Zena Dog" link to see pictures of Jackson, Zena, and my boyfriends dog from his younger days, Cassius. Here's the link:

I have seven cats and a 4-foot python!!! that are rescue pets. My Catahoula hound who passed away from cancer, was a rescue and my other two dogs are pet store dogs. We want to rescue another Catahoula again real soon, they are great dogs...we really miss our Hooligan every day, he was the best dog ever.
My cats are:
Honey-Bear...a fat tortoiseshell
Thistle...a skinny ageing grey tabby
Kiki ... a saucy calico
Bandit ...a three legged black and white short hair
Tissa a black long haired huge cat!
Mystra a tiny old skinny grey and white cat and matron of the house
Tia... a tabby with a huge personality

We live off of a country road down a long drive and constantly have strays showing up. It just breaks my heart.

So your daughter and your husband are animal rescuers also!!!!! Wonderful!!!! I just love hearing what others name their pets. My first cat, a tuxedo cat, was named Henry Dragon. He was so beautiful and handsome. I found him after a hurricane. A tree had fell and he was in the hole of the tree. Just a little Kitty. I did not want a cat. Well, he wanted me for sure. LOL He had cancer and I had to put him down. I still miss that cat every day.

I forgot....My daughter and my husband actually got the two little kittens for me. They were only going to get the girl kitten until Sheila saw the little boy with the chewed off ears. She called Tim and said we had to get them both. She just couldn't leave the other one there.
