I am still in total shock, ya'll. Am I just dreaming? Is it real? Or is someone playing a mean trick on me?

I went out to feed and water the hens out back in the goat barn. I went in and did all that fun stuff. I just happened to glance over in the nester and there it was. A BROWN EGG! I almost fell over getting to it. I blinked a few times to see if it'd still be there. It was! I am too excited! It's a perfect brown egg. It's just beautiful. It's the most beautiful egg I have ever seen. It's not overly small, either. Like the first egg a hen lays. This one is so cute. I had put 2 white store bought eggs in a few nests to bait them. And also had put Hildi the Americana and Summer the Wellsummer, in with them a few days ago. I thought at first it was one of theirs but the lay green and a dark reddish brown egg. So it was a BUFF egg! OMG!

I am just amazed. And thrilled. And oh so darn HAPPY! I sure hope this is not a dream.

Kris, the happy egg gatherer!

Well I don't know much about other breeds of chickens than what we have. But I can't imagine they can hold out too much longer since you are starting to get one or two here and there. Stinkers!!
kristin sherrill Posted - Nov 17 2009 : 8:04:00 PM
Nope. Haven't gotten any in a few days now. I know they have to get going sooner ar later. They're going on 7 months. They should be spitting those eggs out by now. What is wrong with them?

Ya we are very lucky. It would be a long truck ride up here for your roos Im afraid. Plus not too cost effective either. My thoughts are with you. Just keep asking around at farmers markets and maybe local county fairs.Maybe you will stumble on someone good that is what happened to us. We still have a good 45 min drive to get there but its well worth the trip!!! they are by appt only and book 2 to 3 weeks out. So are you getting more eggs?
kristin sherrill Posted - Nov 17 2009 : 7:17:36 PM
Wow! That is a great price for someone to do all that for you. That's well worth the price. How lucky you are.

It was rainy all day here, so no butchering going on. I will do it one day soon.

Kris- Sorry to hear about your crummy day. The place we take our chickens charges 1.70 a chicken. It is more if you want them cut up. They have machines that do everything but it is very fast and it is family owned and my DH is right there beside them the whole time from start to finish. I wish you had someone to do it for you or you lived around here!!

It's raining here. Darn. Now I will have to wait a few days to take the guineas and bucks. It's supposed to rain Wed. too. Not much, but enough to not be able to haul critters in the back of my truck. My friend called last night anyway and said we might need to wait a few more days for her to get good and ready for them all. So I guess all things work out. I just get my mind set on something and when it doesn't go that way it's messes everything else up. But I might be able to get a few roos done if it's not raining too hard.

I sure wish I had someone to do the butchering for me. I thought I had them given away to a family not too far from here. But I haven't heard back from them. So how much do they charge you to do that, Kai? Do they have the plucker? That would be nice to have.

Good luck Kris on the catching and butchering your roosters they will be yummy!! You are very brave. I have a hard enough time helping my DH put them in the back of the truck for the big ride. We are very fortunate there is a family who butchers them locally. They are very quick and have done it for a long time. Glad you are finally getting some eggs!! Maybe now that it is getting a little more quiet there they can consontrate on what they are suppose to be doing.

Yay Kristin!!! I know the feeling!! I'm floating on cloud nine from just discovering my first little prezent from my beautiful RIR! I'm pretty sure i know which lady it is...but can't be positive! congratulations mama hen,you must be so proud, i know i sure am :)
kristin sherrill Posted - Nov 16 2009 : 1:00:04 PM
I am still only getting 1 egg a day. I guess they all don't get it yet. And this is getting to be guite expensive eggs. I have already gone through 1 1/2 bags of laying feed. I have got to get that run built asap. I can't afford this.

My friend came Friday night and got the 14 hens! I was so glad to see them go. It's been very quiet around here. I have all the guineas in the hen house and they are all going to their new home tomorrow. And the 2 lucky bucks.

I will start to butcher the 6 roos tomorrow, too. I am just going to have to do it. Git 'er done! So it will be very quiet then.

I will still have 4 roosters and 6 game hens. Plus the Buffs out back. But the game roos and hens are all over the place. In the pastures and fields. I will not be feeding them anymore. I need to get rid of the roos but they roost so high up in the trees it will be very hard to catch them.

So it's thinning out around here. I wish I could get my house cleaned out now!

Yahooo!!!!!! The fake eggs worked? Im the one who suggested the golf balls. Ours took a long time to get the hang of it but now they are laying fools. And they go outside at will all the time until it gets too cold we may shut them in. Congrats!!!!!! Patients is a something that starts with a v... I have heard.(Never been my strong point)

Thanks Kris for the egg information. I'd love to have chickens, but I'd have no idea how to take care of them, feed them, etc... And- I have too many cats. But, when I am ready to have chickens, I will surely let you know, Kris. Thanks.

What kind did you get, Janice? I think if I ever get any more it will be this time of year. It only makes sense to me to get them now so they'll be ready to lay eggs in the spring when they should. Have fun with those little fluff balls.

I LOVE finding eggs from my new hens when they start. Honestly, I still get a little tickle in my tummy like I've just found buried treasure or something. Yea for you!

Gena, you do need to move as much as you can because of blood clots. But try not to worry too much. I hope you have a better night tonight.

Sherry, it is the neatest thing to get food from our animals. I feel that way about my goats, too. Love that milk.

Marly, different breeds lay different colored eggs. I have chickens that should lay every color. The Buff egg I found today is a lighter brown. But I have never had Buffs so don't know whay they really look like yet. I hope I get more to tell you about. The Americana and Auracana lay green, blue and pink colored eggs. The Leghorn breed lays white eggs. And my one Welsummer hen lays the prettiest almost red eggs. Barred Rocks lay a medium colored brown egg. So it depends on what breed of bird you have. You need some chickens!

Lavonna, I did have a few fake eggs but I can't find them. These white eggs should be ok for awhile til I can get something else.

Alee, it sure is awesome. Finally more eggs. I am going out there in a little while to see if there are any more.

Kris:
I don't know much about chicken eggs. Why do some chickens lay white eggs, and some lay brown eggs? Are the brown eggs better? I'm happy you got an egg.

Kris, I put golf balls in the nest and that seems to fool them. And they do not rot or break.

I had a rough night. Behind my knee kept hurting and I couldn't sleep. I feel better when I am up on my feet. That just sounds strange. I think I am worried about blood clots. They kept talking about that while I was in the hospital.

goodmorning all, happy days for you kris. it is a miracle those eggs. my brotherinlaw stayed with us a while. he would go all around the farm saying look another miracle. what a great life. when i go to milk buittercup the expectation of milk is awesome. like a gift wrapped up warm and waiting. our girls are still in shock over our weather. so slow egg production still. i am ready for a basket full of eggs for the market. savour the egg and enjoy your gathering. thanks for getting back about the pygmy.i will let youknow how it goes with the new mama. sherrye

I really hate to have to keep these girls put up but if that's the only way to get eggs, I guess it has to be done. I will build a run so they can go out. I just need help. But these girls are huge. Really big birds. So i guess it might take them longer to get to the egg laying stage. But I heard they will lay all winter. So here's hoping.

Good for yours, Gena. Isn't it just the neatest thing to go out and gather fresh eggs? I love it. How are you today?

HOORAY! I am so glad Kris. Yesterday is the first day that we got 2 eggs. The one hen has been laying for a couple of weeks now. I guess Buffs just take longer to mature.
I guess you did pinch yourself didn't you.LOL!
