Well I think my goat SadieMae is pregnant. Here are the reason's why I think she might be pregnant.

1. She's gained 17 pounds in last month or so.

2. Her belly looks like she swallowed a basketball

3. She's tired alot.

So Farmgirls, I really need your help! Do you think she sounds pregnant? What do you do for your pregnant does? What do you feed them? I need to know everythink there is to know about pregnant does and how to care for them. Even if she is not pregnant I still need to know this stuff because I'm going to breed my other doe after I worm her. I am so not ready for this. And she's only 7 months old. We were not even going to breed her this year. But my buck got loose so you can imagine the rest. Sorry if this makes not sense at all. I'm just really worried for her. She's just not ready yet. Thanks for any help.
Your worried farmgirl,

Oh, the stories I could tell on THIS subject! I just had a doe kid two days ago. I had NO IDEA she was even pregnant--- AGAIN! I don't know WHEN the buck got to her, but he certainly did. Just 'cause you never see it happen doesn't mean it DIDN'T. Those bucks are pretty darn sneaky and I've got FORTY babies to prove it. In this case, the doe is ALWAYS FAT, even when she's not pregnant. She's just built like that. Carry's all her weight around her middle. She looks like a beer keg with legs, and she's a NIGERIAN!

Honestly, it's impossible to tell with the naked eye if your girl is pregnant or not this early. If you can afford it, you can always take her to a vet for a Sonogram. Not only will they be able to tell you FOR SURE if she's pregnant, but they can also tell you HOW MANY kids she's carrying. Knowing that will help determine how you feed her in the latter months of her pregnancy. The first few months she won't need anything special, as long as she has good quality hay and/or browse and pasture. In the last several weeks of pregnancy the kids grow very rapidly and the doe WILL need supplementation. There are several supplemntal feeds on the market for goats that will work, even good old fashioned sweet cob, which is what I feed MY girls in the last few weeks of pregnancy, AND while they are nursing their kids.

One thing you have to watch closely for is Ketosis, which CAN kill a doe and her undborn kids if it developes. Ketosis is a very nasty metabolic disorder that usually developes later in pregnancy, with does carrying multiples being even more suseptable, but it can usually be avoided by proper nutrition throughout the pregnancy. My goats are on pasture 24/7 and also get hay, so that's never been a problem here. It could also be why my little doe (and some of her other goat-girl buddies!) is so FAT! Happy FAT goats come from California! (LOL!!)

Don't panic Channah. Your little girl will be just fine. Just keep an eye on her. All you can really do at this point is keep doing what you're doing, and DON'T WORRY! She'll deal with this whole thing a lot better than YOU will, that's for SURE. Hope all goes well ~~~ Hugs ~~~ Tracy

I just thought of another way to see if she's pregnant. Put a buck in with her. If there is any interest then she's not. If the buck gets all crazy take him away. That's what I am doing now. I had a buck in with my does a few weeks ago. I took him out. Then yesterday put another buck in. There is nothing going on at all. So they are hopefully all bred. But that's a good way to tell if a goat is pregnant. Put a buck in with her. But don't leave them alone for long!

Well, I'll tell you about my Sadie Mae and her sister Holly Berry. They were both 7 months old when they "accidentaly" got pregnant. It really happens so fast. But a few months later Sadie Mae miscarried hers. Holly later had twins. That was last year. This past breeding season Sadie Mae had twin bucks succesfully and her sister had triplets. Sadie is doing great and she is a good mother. Her udder is so much better than her sister's, too. So I hope she is not pregnant but if she is she'll be fine, I'm sure. How is her size? My Sadie is huge. I think it helps so much when they are bigger, not neccesarally older.

And I don't think she'd look pregnant just a month after being bred. Mine never show til about 4 months in. You can also tell about a few weeks before they kid when their udder starts bagging up. You will notice that, but not til they are almost ready to kid. Some don't til the day before.

Just keep her healthy and she should be fine. It's probably too late to give her something to make her abort. That can only be done right after the deed happened. So just wait and see.

I'm glad your boy is better.

I don't think she would be looking that big after just a month. I seem to remember you feed your goats grain, right? Perhaps she is eating more than you think? She could still be pregnant, but I don't think she would look like she swallowed a basketball- as for the weight gain- she could just be packing on the pounds before winter and since she is only 7 months old she still has some growth to do. Just guessing here since I haven't seen her.

However it could be because she is pregnant. If you don't want to pay for a vet visit to check, then you'll probably just have to wait until February to see!

oh, sorry about that. It's been about a month or so. I don't think she's fat at all because she does not eat that much.

No I mean, How long ago did the buck get loose? As in how long since she could have conceived? If her belly is that huge and it hasn't been that long she might have something wrong with her that isn't pregnancy or she could just be fat. Goats carry their weight in their belly more than on their back and hips (in my experience).

I have no idea how long the buck was loose. I just happened to look out and there he was in with the girls. And no SadieMae has not been wormed yet. I was going to do it sometime really soon. So now I have to find a wormer that's ok for pregnant does if she is pregnant.
