I was coming home the other day from my doctors appointment and looked over at the pasture. And to my suprise there was a LARGE black cow in it. Not in the fenced part...I went inside and asked my husband if he knew we had a cow in the pasture. He laughed and said "No we dont"..I said...look...and we both went outside and went to the pasture where the cow was grazing. Well my husband went up to the neighbors to the back of us and looked to see if he had cows...no he didnt...and his fence looked good..Well then he had a the idea to make the cow go into the fenced area...Well we got her to the fenced part and she took a hard left...and went up the hill to the wooded area. I tried to follow but didnt know that cows could run so fast. I caught up to her before she got to the woods and made her go back...I am sure she was scared. And when I tried to convience her to go down the hill, she had other ideas..she cut right through the woods and I couldnt catch up to her...well she found grass when she was in our pasture. I am sure she will find grass again. We still have no idea where she came from. No one seems to have lost a cow....I really didnt know that cows could run so fast. Lesson learned. Deborah

We have not seen her again. I am not sure what happened with her. We looked all around and told about 6 people that are around us. But no one seems to know where she came from or who might have owned her. I feel really bad about not being to catch her.

That's the right thing to do Teresa. Can't be too careful, especially if you can SEE the animal is sick.

No you can't save them all, my friend learned that the hard way many years ago feeling sorry for a sick , half starved Jersey cow. She took her in and she contaminated all of her other cattle and she lost her and 2 of her own, and yes she was away from all of her livestock, but some stuff is airborne. Its not always worth the chance, especialy when your livestock means the differance on whether you eat or not. So, I would not have taken the chance with a stray , sick cow, I would have called someone, to report her/him thou.

I would take another cow right now. I wish you could catch her and bring her up here. I had my steer butchered a few weeks ago and Mazie Mae is a little lonely now. She's not as bad as I thought but she could still use a friend. So I am looking for a buddy for her. I have a friend who might sell me her half Jersey heifer soon.
So have ya'll seen the cow anymore? Or found the owner yet?

Patience, LOTS of prayers, and bit of ingenuity can work wonders if someone is willing. I've treated some very NASTY cases here on the farm all by myself (with GOD'S guidence!!!) because I couldn't afford a vet bill. (Laminitis in one of my horses was ONE of them. It took a full year for him to recover, but I never gave up. Needless to say, my vet was VERY impressed! He thought I was CRAZY, but he was impressed!). Most people think they can't do it themselves, but they can. Natural medicine seems to take a LOOOONG time to show results, but what people don't realize is that they are actually TREATING the illness, not just covering up the symptoms! It always seems the animal is getting worse before they get better, but it's the same with humans.
No, you CAN'T win them all, but, as a livestock and pet owner, I figure if I can't fix them, there's probably not a lot the vet can do for them either, except send me a BIG FAT bill! I'm fortunate though, to have an "Old School" vet (70+yrs and seen it ALL!). He's really good about giving me advice over the phone and telling me what to use right out of my medicine cabinet, or what to get at the grocery store. He's also honest if he thinks it's hopeless to even try.
I sure hope whoever owns that cow does the right thing, whatever it might be. If someone else takes her in, I hope THEY do the right thing too.

You are right Tracy, snotty nose is bad, and thats why she is probally loose, someone does not want to pay a vet bill. Animals are being dumped like crazy all over the country, pets and livestock alike, it just makes me sick.

A snotty nose if not a good sign. If she's sick, you really don't want her to come back. I know that sounds harsh, but I also know how EXPENISVE it is to treat a sick animal... especially if it's not even YOURS!!!
Hope she finds her way back home safely and her owners are actually glad to see her! I also hope that she wasn't just turned loose because those owners could no longer care for her. Such a sad state of things right now for God's lovely creatures.... I thank him daily that he has given me the knowlege, strength, AND the means, to care for all my four legged and feathered friends. Sounds like animals are getting out all over the place- I chased down a pony this week too. Too bad she didn't come into your pasture. If you see her again I suggest tempting her with grain.

It would be nice to see her again. Both I and my husband are worried about her. At least if she let us put her in the fenced area she would be safe. And have plenty to eat and drink.
